Downton Abbey’s Third Movie Shocker: Missing Beloved Character Changes Everything!
Paul Giamatti noted that the making of the third Downton Abbey film hasn’t felt the same, given the absence of a cherished character from the series.
In a recent interview, the 57-year-old actor shared that he would be reprising his character, Harold Levinson, in an upcoming film. He opened up about his short part in this new production during the conversation.
If you don’t recognize the character’s name, it’s likely because they were last seen in a Christmas special from 2013.
Speaking about the filming, he mentioned that it wasn’t quite the same experience without Dame Maggie Smith. However, he added that her presence was still palpable during the process.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I must confess that one of the most remarkable moments in my professional journey thus far has been sharing the set with a truly iconic actress – an encounter that left an indelible mark on my career.
He shared with everyone: “Her absence made it different, yet it had a sense of being dedicated to her somehow.
‘She certainly still feels present through the whole thing.’

Dame Maggie sadly passed away in September of last year at the age of 89.
Over the course of six eventful decades, I’ve had the privilege of weaving my craft through a multitude of memorable roles. From breathing life into Wendy in Hook (1991), to donning the robes of Professor McGonagall within the enchanting world of Harry Potter, each part has left an indelible mark on my journey as an artist.
Lately, she has gained additional recognition for playing the role of Violet Crawley, the matriarch of Downton Abbey, from 2010 to 2015.
In a surprising turn of events, Paul confessed that he was taken aback when the producers requested his return for the show given how minimal his initial role had been.
It was intriguing for him that they inquired about him since he had thought, “I don’t play a significant role in this narrative.
Funny enough, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride when I reflect on my character’s part in this film. He doesn’t just have a role – he plays a pivotal one. There’s a crucial action he takes that truly makes an impact on the movie as a whole.
I exclaimed, “It’s quite amusing that they asked me to handle such a crucial, impactful task again.
However, the actor refused to give any spoilers about what this significant thing might be.

The upcoming third Downton Abbey movie is planned as a fitting conclusion, where the Crawley family and their staff will receive the heartfelt send-off they deserve.
In the upcoming movie, we’ll see some beloved characters making a comeback, like Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Michelle Dockery.
It’s anticipated that the storyline might continue from where the second movie, “A New Era” (2022), left off, but specific details remain uncertain.
Additionally, it was intended as a heartfelt homage to the remarkable Maggie Smith, whose iconic character, Lady Violet, bid farewell in The New Era.
Michelle Dockery, known as Lady Mary Crawley, shared with Collider that reuniting was a delight for everyone involved. It’s truly a testament to the impact and quality of the movie, especially in honor of Maggie Smith.
This round of filming, I genuinely enjoyed every moment of it. Given that it was our final one, it felt incredibly unique and very special.
