Laura Carmichael, known for her role in Downton Abbey, will star in a new historical drama with Adam Brody. The movie, currently titled A Night at Claridge’s, will be directed by Whit Stillman, who is returning to filmmaking after a decade-long break.
Whit Stillman most recently directed the 2016 film Love & Friendship, which featured Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for his 1990 film, Metropolitan.
Stillman wrote the screenplay for A Night at Claridge’s, which is based on Patrick Hamilton’s 1947 novel, The Slaves of Solitude.

The film takes place in a small town in southern England in 1943, shortly before the D-Day invasion. It centers on Miss Roach (played by Carmichael), who works as a reader for a publishing company, as American soldiers arrive and fill the town.
Following the bombing of her London apartment, Miss Roach relocates to a quiet town and rents a room at a boarding house. There, she encounters Mr. Thwaites, who enjoys picking on her, and Vicki, a woman from Germany.
What to Read Next
Miss Roach’s friendship with Vicki faces challenges when American Lieutenant Dayton Pike arrives, as both women find themselves attracted to him.
According to Variety, Tom Bennett from House of the Dragon and acclaimed British actress Susan Hampshire will also be joining the cast.
I was so sad to see Lady Edith Crawley’s story end in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale – that was the last time I saw Laura Carmichael play her, as far as I know!
When the film came out, Julian Fellowes told Digital Spy that it would be the final installment of Downton Abbey.
She explained that being able to definitively conclude the story felt important, allowing them to say goodbye to it. They were eager to reach a good ending, and she felt they achieved that with the TV series, leaving her very satisfied with how it concluded.
She explained that being able to do the same thing with films felt like a special opportunity, and they really wanted to deliver on that idea completely.
