Her wit and charm were unparalleled, her performances were legendary, and her ability to make even the most mundane conversations captivating was nothing short of magical.


Actress Dame Maggie Smith, famously known for her role in Downton Abbey, passed away at the venerable age of 89. Already, an outpouring of heartfelt tributes for the departed thespian has started pouring in.

Hugh Bonneville, who starred alongside Smith in the hit period drama, leads the tributes.

“Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent,” he said (via the BBC News). “She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances. My condolences to her boys and wider family.”

Smith died on Friday (September 27) morning in hospital surrounded by friends and family.

The star’s death was announced in a joint statement from her sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin.

In more relaxed terms, the statement shared that she was a very private individual who surrounded herself with friends and loved ones in her final moments. She leaves behind two sons and five adoring grandchildren who are heartbroken over losing such an exceptional mother and grandmother.

Additionally, Rob Lowe expressed his condolences for the deceased actress too. Notably, he worked together with Smith in the 1992 movie titled “Suddenly, Last Summer.

He expressed his sorrow on X, saying that it was heartbreaking to learn about the passing of Dame Maggie Smith. Working alongside her was an experience he would never forget, as collaborating in a two-shot felt like teaming up with a majestic lion.

Ms. Smith was a formidable eater who had no trouble devouring others, yet she was humorous and delightful to be around. She didn’t tolerate foolishness. Her unique spirit will be greatly missed. Farewell, Ms. Smith! May your journey be swift.
