Downton Abbey star recalls Maggie Smith set accident
Actor Michael Fox, known for his role in Downton Abbey, reminisced about an on-set incident involving the late Dame Maggie Smith during their filming days.
Actor Fox gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Andy Parker on the ITV series, where he served as footman to the Dowager Countess Violet Crawley (Smith). He made his debut in season five and continued through the sixth and last season, as well as in the Downton Abbey films, including the upcoming third installment.
Today on “The One Show,” Fox recounted a humorous incident that occurred during filming with the late Smith, who sadly passed away in September of last year.
Speaking about Maggie, he remarked that the experience was nothing short of exceptional. As a fledgling actor, he confessed to feeling quite jittery. There was even an instance on set where he almost sent her toppling over entirely.
Since I draped the cloak around her, they agreed to continue, and I consented, tugging on the cloak which caused her to almost completely tip over.
As if that wasn’t enough, Fox revealed he then accidentally trapped her fingers in a prop.
As Maggie brought up the topic about settling the matter regarding her purse, I assured her, “Absolutely, Maggie! Let me help you with that,” and gently guided her fingers towards it.
The actor admits he “never fully got over” the incident but was pleased she took it in her stride.
Reflecting on her passing last year, Fox expressed: “It was truly awe-inspiring to see all the heartfelt tributes pouring in about her. I feel incredibly honored to have collaborated with such an exceptional individual.
In the latest chapter, Downton Abbey: A New Era, I said a heartfelt farewell to Smith’s character, as the Dowager Countess took her final bow in this world.
As per Gareth Neame, the film’s executive producer, the third movie was intended to honor her all along. However, following the actor’s demise, it now seems particularly meaningful and moving.
He shared with TVLine that the passing of the Dowager is now felt as much more substantial, seeing actors portray characters grieving the family’s matriarch. Yet, to him, it seems like the actors are also mourning the show’s matriarch character, making the performance appear more authentic and profound.
In September of this year, the third installment of “Downton Abbey” is set to hit the screens. This new episode brings back Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Michelle Dockery, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, and Lesley Nicol to reenact their beloved characters.
The third Downton Abbey movie is due to be released on September 12.
