Downton Abbey star Penelope Wilton’s “wonderful” British drama is on TV tonight

Tonight, you can watch the movie The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry on Channel 4 at 10pm. It stars Penelope Wilton, known from Downton Abbey, and Jim Broadbent, who you might recognize from Paddington. It should also be available to watch online through Channel 4’s streaming service after it airs.

The movie is based on a 2012 novel and tells the story of a man who finds out his friend is seriously ill with cancer. He promises to walk 500 miles to see her, encouraging her to stay strong until he arrives.

Hettie Macdonald directed this, and she’s known for her work on popular shows like Doctor Who – she directed the fan-favorite episode ‘Blink’ – and Normal People.

The film did well with the critics, standing at 74% positive on Rotten Tomatoes from 43 reviews.

Metro described Harold Fry as overly sentimental and a bit cheesy, noting some of the dialogue was very direct. However, they also said it had a charmingly English quality – like a bittersweet and quirky treat reminiscent of a traditional English dessert.
