Downton Abbey boss Julian Fellowes’ next TV project in the works

As a seasoned gamer of life’s intricate board, I find myself eagerly anticipating Julian Fellowes‘ new TV project – a detective series based on Donna Leon’s Detective Brunetti novels. Having been captivated by the wit and charm of Downton Abbey, I can only imagine the rich tapestry of characters and stories that await me in Venice. The books, spanning three decades and 33 novels, promise a depth and breadth that will surely satisfy my insatiable appetite for a good mystery.

As a gaming aficionado, I’d put it this way: “Guess who’s stepping into a brand-new mystery-solving adventure? None other than Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey! He’s diving headfirst into another TV project, where he’ll be breathing life into a series of top-selling detective novels.

According to Deadline, the show’s lead is set to assume the role of both writer and executive producer for the Detective Brunetti series by Donna Leon.

The series of books began in the early 1990s, and they focus on Guido Brunelli, a Venetian commissioner (equivalent to a detective superintendent), who works for the Italian State Police in Venice.

The series has published 33 books up to now, with the latest one coming out this year, and it has also been transformed into a German television series in the past.

20th Century Television is currently developing the Fellowes series, a project established by the late producer Ileen Maisel who will receive an executive producer credit.

Felix Legge has been brought on as both a co-writer and producer, with author Leon joining the team as a co-executive producer.

Currently, preparations are being made for the third movie of Downton Abbey, having already completed filming. It’s scheduled to be released in the coming year.

A few days ago, Hugh Bonneville announced that the movie will honor the memory of our dear Maggie Smith, who tragically passed away in September and portrayed Violet Crawley so brilliantly.

He shared that we completed what seems to be our last Downton Abbey movie this past summer, set to release in September at Virgin Radio UK. It feels like a satisfying conclusion to all the tales, making it an ideal cinematic experience for devoted fans.

The story is deeply rooted within the house, and as we bid farewell to these characters, it’s particularly moving to say goodbye to Dame Maggie. Her on-screen departure was heartfelt, and now, off-screen, she will be greatly missed. The final movie will undoubtedly serve as a lasting tribute to her memory.
