Downton Abbey 3’s new trailer reveals surprise twist for Lady Mary

Hold onto your breath, for the trailer of “Downton Abbey: The Series Finale” has unveiled a surprising turn of events in Lady Mary’s life.

Michelle Dockery’s character is now a divorcee, since it seems her marriage to Matthew Goode’s character, Henry Talbot, has ended.

As a devoted admirer, I must admit that even with their utmost attempts to keep it under wraps – considering the 1930s’ societal norms – the impending divorce is bound to stir some controversy within the upper echelons of society. Coincidentally, Downton Abbey is on the verge of transitioning from Robert’s (Hugh Bonneville) stewardship to his eldest daughter at this very moment.

In the trailer for the last film, we see Mary, adorned in a red dress, being abruptly thrown out of a ball by Joely Richardson’s traditional character, who expresses her disapproval vocally regarding the upcoming divorce.

Mary swiftly departs, accompanied by her sister Edith (Laura Carmichael), father Robert, and mother Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), all following closely behind. However, it’s impossible to keep the information from spreading.

In the spotlight due to rumors about her questionable private affairs, a fresh character portrayed by Alessandro Nivola emerges, hinting at him being a possible romantic interest in the storyline.

Currently, there’s intense focus on Mary, with people closely examining each of her actions to determine whether she is capable of managing Downton as a solo woman.

Additionally, the video offers a peek into the character of Harold Levinson, played by Paul Giamatti, who is Countess Cora’s playboy brother and makes a visit to Downton Abbey concealing a secret of his own.

Difficult moments necessitate the family standing together as one, with Robert pondering how his mother might have handled the situation if she were still here.

The film will pay a heartfelt tribute to the Dowager Countess Violet, portrayed by the late actress Maggie Smith, by celebrating both the iconic character she played and the adored actress herself.

It appears that the reconciliation between Mary and Henry might not occur, and this situation might actually turn out to be beneficial for them both.

Earlier, it was mentioned that Goode declined participating in the third Downton Abbey film because of a clash in his schedule following the release of A New Era.

In response to comments about his character, the celebrity stated that Henry was starting to resemble someone who was lacking in assertiveness or excitement, essentially becoming rather dull or unexciting.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is released in cinemas on 12 September 2025.

The debut print magazine from Digital Spy, titled “British Comedy Legends,” is now available! You can purchase it from your local newsstands or online for only £3.99.
