Downton Abbey 3 had an alternate ending – and Michelle Dockery is right to say it changed for the better

I just read something really interesting! Michelle Dockery – you know, Lady Mary from *Downton Abbey* – said the show’s ending could have been totally different. She told *The Hollywood Reporter* that one idea they had was to have Mary back at her desk in the library, just getting on with work. It’s a much quieter ending than what we actually got, and I’m kind of fascinated by how different things could have been!

As Dockery points out, the series finale, which included a touching tribute to the late Dame Maggie Smith, was a fitting conclusion.

They’re showing Mary, Cora, and Robert saying goodbye, which feels like a farewell to the audience. However, Mary isn’t truly alone; she’s still surrounded by the staff at the house, and she’s expecting more family to arrive. It suggests a look towards what’s coming next.

What to Read Next

The story feels optimistic and I appreciate that Mary ultimately finds happiness as an independent woman. It’s a fresh start for her – she’s excited to take control and manage her own life. While the story concludes, it also feels like her journey is just beginning.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, Michelle Dockery shared that she feels the series has a “really beautiful” conclusion.

When I first read it, I was really impressed with how Julian Fellowes neatly resolved all the characters’ stories. It felt like a natural progression forward, despite being the end of the series. There’s a strong sense of a new generation taking over, and a feeling that certain characters were passing on their legacies. Overall, I was very satisfied with how everything concluded, especially for Mary.

Likewise, Laura Carmichael, who portrays Lady Edith Crawley, found the ending “really moving”.
