Doug Jones feels Saru got his closure in the final season of Star Trek: Discovery

As a seasoned gamer of all things Star Trek, I must confess that the final season of Discovery left me feeling like I had just beamed down to the holodeck and found a perfect replica of Vulcan’s Glory Forge – nothing short of breathtaking! The way they wrapped up Saru’s storyline, from his humble beginnings as a Kelpien terrified of death to his ultimate transformation into a diplomatic powerhouse, was nothing short of masterful.

Discovery wrapped up most of the crew members’ stories in a satisfying manner. Since the creators didn’t know about the show’s cancellation before wrapping up season five, not all loose ends were tied up equally well. However, actor Doug Jones, who portrayed Saru, was happy with how his character’s storyline ended.

In an interview with TV Insider, Jones expressed that he was content with how season five ended, unsure about where the story would head next. The character Saru, initially a Kelpien fearing death, had evolved to become a Federation ambassador who married the president of Ni’Var, TRina. His journey concluded satisfactorily, but this wasn’t the first time Jones felt the ending was flawless.

It’s funny, every season that we’ve had on Star Trek: Discovery has come to a conclusion of its own that makes you think, is that the end of the series? I felt that many times. Are we coming back? So at the end of [Season] 5, it felt like, oh, and Saru’s storyline did come to a lovely closure with his love interest with T’Rina. He has this new position that’s very diplomatic, it’s very suited to him as he travels about the galaxy on behalf of smaller planets with the Federation. It’s just a great fit, and I think he’s got his happily ever after. So I felt pretty good at the end of Season 5 and [a sense of] I don’t know where we go from here.

At the conclusion of season five, before the coda, it appeared that the show was wrapping up with Saru finding his happily ever after, Captain Burnham [Sonequa Martin-Green] and Book [David Ajala] reuniting, and Dr. Culber [Wilson Cruz] discovering a sense of meaning and purpose by helping save Burnham. Tilly [Mary Wiseman] felt she had found her place, and some crew members received less resolution, but overall, the episode “Life, Itself” could have served as a standalone series finale without further footage, even though it was initially intended only as the season finale.

Although I enjoyed the flashback showing Admiral Burnham back in Discovery’s captain’s chair, it wouldn’t have bothered me if it hadn’t been included. Regardless, it was clear that she had found contentment and joy, which was what truly mattered. Just like Captain Janeway [Kate Mulgrew] before her, there was no question that she would continue to achieve even greater accomplishments.

If the series had been renewed for a sixth season, Saru, one of the main characters, would have appeared less frequently since he became an ambassador and was off the ship. Despite the series ending, it concluded on a strong note, leaving fans somewhat disappointed but hopeful for more. Fortunately, with Starfleet Academy on the horizon, we can expect to see the Discovery crew again. There’s even a chance we might get a Discovery movie in the future – after all, anything is possible in the world of Star Trek!
