Michael Waldron, a major creative force behind Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, shared a concept he had for the Young Avengers team that was planned for the now-canceled movie Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Waldron, known for his work on Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was originally writing the script for Kang Dynasty before Marvel decided to move forward with Avengers: Doomsday instead. He’s now co-writing Doomsday with Stephen McFeely.
During a Reddit Q&A to celebrate the finale of his Hulu series Chad Powers, co-creator Michael Waldron addressed a question about how early ideas for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty might influence Avengers: Doomsday. While he didn’t directly answer, Waldron revealed he and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness once pitched a story where the Young Avengers would battle a version of Kang. They later found out this particular Kang was considered one of his weaker forms – the lizard-like variant briefly shown after the credits of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It’s unknown whether this idea was originally intended for a separate Young Avengers project or as part of The Kang Dynasty.
Jeff Loveness and I came up with a fun idea for the Young Avengers to fight a version of Kang, and we were really excited about it. But then we found out this Kang was new to the job – he literally had a card saying to be patient with him, as it was his first day! We were a little disappointed, and we thought he might have ended up being the lizard-like Kang from the end of ‘Kang Dynasty,’ but we’re not sure. Regardless, we had a good time brainstorming.
Marvel Has Been Teasing The Young Avengers for Years

According to Waldron, the idea for a Young Avengers project – whether as its own series or within Avengers: The Kang Dynasty – was still very much in the early stages and may not have progressed beyond initial discussions. Connecting Kang the Conqueror to the team fits the comic book storyline, where a young Nathaniel Richards becomes the hero Iron Lad, trying to prevent his future as a villain. However, it seems Iron Lad wasn’t initially central to the plan; the Young Avengers were first considered for a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before any thought was given to them leading their own story.
Throughout the recent phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s been a clear pattern of introducing characters who could become the Young Avengers. Shows and movies like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, The Marvels, and the Agatha All Along series have all featured these young heroes. The end of The Marvels even showed Ms. Marvel trying to recruit Hawkeye to form a team, but that storyline hasn’t continued yet. The closest we’ve seen to an actual Young Avengers team-up so far was in the Marvel Zombies animated series, which featured different versions of Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, and Ironheart working together.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m still wondering what’s happening with the Young Avengers. Right now, none of the actors we associate with those characters seem to be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. It’s possible they could pop up later during reshoots, or maybe even have a bigger role in Avengers: Secret Wars. But honestly, that movie is already shaping up to be packed. I think Marvel might be smart to hold off on really introducing the Young Avengers until after this Multiverse Saga wraps up. That way, they can give them the spotlight they deserve in Phase Seven and beyond, alongside the X-Men. It just feels like the right move to build them up properly.
