DOOM: The Dark Ages Will Make You ‘Feel like a Silverback on a Hoverboard with a Sledgehammer’, Says id
During its Xbox Developer_Direct presentation, id Software shared various comparisons they have for the Slayer in DOOM: The Dark Ages. One comparison is describing this version of the character as an “iron tank”, contrasting it from the “fighter jet” you controlled in DOOM 2016. However, a more intriguing analogy they made during our preview discussion likens the Slayer to a large, hairy ape.
In “Dark Ages,” you’ll have the sensation of being a powerful silverback gorilla riding a hoverboard, armed with a sledgehammer, as Game Director Hugo Martin described it. This is quite a unique comparison, reminiscent of the speed and agility of Bruce Lee on a skateboard in DOOM 2016, but with an emphasis on strength and size instead.
Instead of physically swinging a sledgehammer, the Slayer will possess the destructive force equivalent to one. Equipped with an array of intimidating weapons such as the spiked mace, iron flail, electrified gauntlet, and the Skull Crusher – a weapon that pulverizes skulls and ejects shards as ammunition. Additionally, armed with the Shield Saw, the Slayer can block attacks while also generating a ‘parry shockwave’, eliminating weaker opponents within its radius, allowing for a more intense confrontation against the stronger demons in the central arena.
Studio Director Marty Stratton agrees with Martin’s assessment, highlighting that the “sound and sensation of the DOOM character jumping from a ledge” gives him an explosive vibe, almost like a “mobile bomb”. It’s not surprising then that id’s motto for the upcoming DOOM is “stand and fight”, suggesting that the character appears to be a massive, unyielding figure, but one that promises an exciting gaming experience.
