Don’t Move ending explained: Does Iris survive?
As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who has survived countless digital nightmares, I can confidently say that “Don’t Move” is one of the most chilling experiences I’ve encountered recently. Kelsey Asbille’s performance as Iris was nothing short of captivating, drawing me into her harrowing struggle for survival against a truly terrifying adversary.
In the thriller “Don’t Move,” Kelsey Asbille from the hit show Yellowstone battles for survival against a ruthless serial killer. Will she manage to escape this deadly situation unscathed?
The chilling horror film, co-directed by Sam Raimi, who brought us the Spider-Man series, and Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, can now be streamed on Netflix.
In a secluded forest where her son perished, Asbille portrays Iris – a woman contemplating suicide. But just as she’s about to act, her plan is thwarted by the arrival of Richard, an appealing stranger played by Finn Wittrock from American Horror Story, who manages to convince Iris that her life holds value.
Following his successful effort to win her confidence and guide her to his vehicle, the unknown man administers a substance that causes temporary paralysis to her. With only twenty minutes left before her body fully collapses, she must quickly flee for assistance.
Under intense pressure from the suspected murderer, she hastens through the woods, finding renewed determination to survive.
Here’s what happens in the ending of Netflix’s Don’t Move.
Don’t Move ending explained
Before the twenty minutes were over and she was fully immobilized, Iris successfully breaks free from Richard by leaping into a close-by river. Yet, as she reaches the bank, she finds herself completely unable to move.
She has three opportunities to escape Richard, but they all go wrong.
Initially, she finds herself on a rural homestead, where an elderly gentleman extends aid to her. However, it’s Richard who arrives later and brutally slaughters the old man, setting the farm ablaze. Subsequently, they pull over at a gas station, and a perceptive woman senses something amiss, subtly alerting the authorities.
Ultimately, a police officer (depicted by the actor Daniel Francis from Bridgerton) approaches them, coming close to uncovering the truth despite Richard’s efforts to deceive him. Tragically, the officer meets his end, extinguishing Iris’ last glimmer of rescue.
Richard intends to bring Iris, who remains paralyzed, to a log cabin nestled within the forest. The nature of their weekend activities remains unclear, but it’s evident that Iris will not survive this trip.
While driving, Richard receives a call from his family, who don’t know about his criminal inclinations, inviting him for a weekend at the cabin. This unexpected news forces him to alter his plans. He laments, “We could have had such a pleasant weekend together,” but now he must “hurry and wrap things up.
It appears that he often finishes off his crimes by drowning his victims at a local lake, a method that helps him eliminate any evidence linking him to the crime.
Prior to delving into the reasons, let’s explore how a traumatic car accident resulted in him becoming a serial killer, taking the life of his first wife as the initial event.
“I discovered my sense of self. For most of my life, I’ve felt detached. But after the accident, something changed. I remember vividly the position of her head, the shimmering glass on her lap, and the realization that she had taken her last breath. Over and over again, I re-lived that moment, lying in bed pondering if I had ever felt a divine presence. Eventually, I understood that the answer was within me – God was not someone external, but an inner part of myself.
The final thing he said to her was “thank you,” because her passing enabled him to grasp a profound truth. Now, all he yearns for is to experience that sense of realization repeatedly.
Currently in the heart of the lake, Iris, having somewhat recovered her movement, launches one final, desperate effort to rescue herself.
She requests that Richard fetch her child’s red boat-shaped toy, which she had put away in her pocket during the film. Perhaps because he is monstrous, yet still a parent like herself, he may choose to fulfill her final request.
Once near enough, Iris grabs a knife and thrusts it into his face. After that, she seizes his firearm and fires multiple shots at him until he tumbles into the lake.
In a final flurry of panic, the boat begins to submerge, but miraculously, Iris recovers her composure and swims ashore. Meanwhile, near-death Richard also escapes the lake, and just before he takes his last breath, she whispers “thank you” – a poignant reference to his earlier tale about being God.
In the wake of Richard’s passing, I, too, was consumed by sorrow, as Iris had been over the loss of her beloved son. Stricken with despair, she contemplated ending her own life, but fate intervened just a few hours later. Much like a toy boat bobbing on the lake, Iris, against all odds, found a way to rise back to the surface and made the conscious decision to carry on living.
