Tonight on TV, the critically acclaimed Australian period drama “The Narrow Road to the Deep North,” featuring Jacob Elordi, is airing.
The five-part television adaptation, modeled after Richard Flanagan’s 2013 novel, tells the story of Dorrigo Evans (portrayed by Elordi and Ciarán Hinds), who grapples with recollections of his past relationship with Amy Mulvaney (Odessa Young), his uncle’s wife.
Over three distinct timeframes, the story unfolds, revealing Dorrigo’s experiences as a World War II soldier and a prisoner of war. Intricate details are provided, showing how he grapples with enduring feelings of guilt in the years that follow his military service.
Tonight at 9.15pm, the series penned by Shaun Grant and helmed by Justin Kurzel will debut on BBC One in the United Kingdom, having previously been broadcast in Australia and the US earlier this year.
Following its acquisition by the broadcaster in December, Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, described the series as both complex and exceptionally outstanding. She went on to say that it was a moving and heart-rending depiction of a man’s extensive journey through life.

Globally, this period-set series has received universal praise from critics, maintaining a flawless 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 27 reviews. The show has been described as both “powerful” and “compelling” in the site’s critical consensus.
The show’s various scenes often have an intense, physical feeling, exploring both the agony and ecstasy associated with the body while also delving into deeper themes concerning the mind, emotions, universe, and conflict. This analysis comes from The New York Times.
The Guardian also offered high praise, stating: “There’s no question about the show’s authenticity or the empathy it conveys. It’s not so much a portrayal of war itself, but rather the emotional scar it inflicts.

In the review by The Hollywood Reporter, they observed a unique, lingering emotional depth in Kurzel’s work, which was powerfully conveyed through an emotionally stirring portrayal by Jacob Elordi. Meanwhile, IndieWire described it as sensitive, filled with atmosphere, and brutally violent.
Flanagan’s initial work received widespread praise from readers as well. The Financial Times described it as a beautifully crafted, heart-rending, and thoughtfully paced novel, going so far as to call it a veritable masterpiece.
The Narrow Road to the Deep North premieres on BBC One at 9.15pm.
