The television show titled ‘The Secret Agent’ recently became available on Netflix and ITVX. This spy drama is set during Victorian London times and originally aired on BBC One in 2016. Now, it can be discovered by a fresh group of viewers.
This drama features an exceptional ensemble, with Stephen Graham, Toby Jones, and Vicky McClure among its stars. Notably, Graham and McClure have worked together before; they previously appeared together in Shane Meadows’ production, “This Is England,” which was released in the mid-2000s. They also collaborated again more recently on the widely acclaimed BBC series, “Line of Duty.
The story of “The Secret Agent” is derived from Joseph Conrad’s 1907 novel, known for its dark and satirical tone. Set in 1886, this adaptation by the BBC follows a man who owns a shop in Soho, but secretly works as a spy for the Russian embassy.
Graham assumes the position of London’s Chief Inspector Heat, a character who consistently puts public safety above personal risk. As portrayed in the character outline, Heat is typically adherent to the rules (follows the book) yet demonstrates compassion by being willing to bend the rules, if necessary.

Jones assumes the role as the lead character, Mr. Verloc, the covert agent in question. He’s associated with an anarchist group and secretly works under the influence of Chief Inspector Heat. Winnie, portrayed by McClure, is a woman from the working class, specifically the daughter of a pub owner. She married Jones more for financial stability than romantic affection.
In addition to Tom Hughes, the drama’s ensemble includes Ian Hart (“The Responder”), Charlie Hamblett (“Killing Eve”), David Dawson (“Ripper Street”), and Penny Downie (“Netflix’s The Diplomat”). This three-part BBC adaptation was penned by Tony Marchant, who has previously worked on TV shows such as the BBC’s “Public Enemies” and ITV’s “Butterfly,” which is now available on Netflix as well.
The Secret Agent aired on BBC One and is now on Netflix and ITVX in the UK.
