The production of the show is being overseen by acclaimed playwright Conor McPherson, who has also adapted it. Matthew Dunster, known for “The Pillowman” and “2:22 A Ghost Story,” will be directing it.
Set in the world of the initial Hunger Games story, this captivating narrative chronicles the bravery, resistance, and indomitable human spirit of our fearless heroine, Katniss Everdeen. As she embarks on a journey of self-exploration, she transforms into a symbol of rebellion and hope.
Collins said she was “thrilled” her beloved franchise was in the hands of McPherson and Dunster.
As a gamer, I’ve gotta say, Conor nailed it with this adaptation – it’s unlike anything I’ve seen before from the script. And let me tell you, Matthew really outdid himself with his engaging, action-packed staging. It offers a fresh perspective that takes our storytelling experience to a whole new level!
Dunster confirmed that McPherson had crafted a “tense and risky piece,” much like the plays he’s globally acclaimed for.
The speaker noted that Conor McPherson skillfully extracts the intensity and impact from both the source material (the book and movie) and delivers a tense, risky play that aligns with his well-known style.
“He honours the young voice of Katniss Everdeen and puts her front and centre.
For more than a year now, we’ve been refining our play with an elite creative team, meticulously shaping our theatrical language to create an experience that mirrors both the intensity and innovation of Suzanne Collins’ novel and the passion and excitement of the film. However, we will present it in our unique theatre style.
“We want our Hunger Games to be uniquely, thrillingly theatrical.”
In a recent interview, McPherson shared insights about the motivations behind his stage adaptation, stating: “Being a father of a teenager, I find immense fulfillment in shaping a narrative that resonates with today’s youth. Its themes of resilience and moral courage are particularly relevant for young people navigating these tumultuous times.
We strive to pay tribute to Suzanne Collins’ accomplishment by creating an adaptation that remains true to the original, offering just as much excitement on stage as there is in the book.
It’s been delightful to see the theatrical style of this production develop, thanks to dynamic workshops led by Matthew Dunster and choreographer Charlotte Broom, along with their dedicated group of talented young actors. Their relentless effort has really paid off.
Earlier this month, the new Hunger Games novel by Suzanne Collins, titled “Sunrise at the Reaping,” hit the shelves.
2026 will see the big-screen debut of the newly adapted film based on the recently published prequel novel, scheduled for release by Lionsgate on November 20th.
