Tonight, on television (Sunday, 3rd of August), “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” – a highly praised period drama featuring Jacob Elordi and Odessa Young – returns.
According to Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, a five-episode Australian miniseries is now streaming on BBC iPlayer. If you’re watching on BBC One, they will show episode three tonight at 9:20 pm.
According to the summary, “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” follows the journey of Dorrigo Evans (Elordi), initially as a young man, with Ciarán Hinds portraying the older Dorrigo. It delves into his intense romance with Amy Mulvaney (Young), his harrowing experiences as a prisoner of war during World War 2, and his later life as a renowned surgeon and a somewhat unwilling war hero in his later years.
Praised as an “often overlooked gem” by a social media user, this series is also referred to as a “hidden treasure that’s truly underrated and will astound you” on IMDb. Remarkably, it boasts a flawless rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Praised by reviewers, The Times stated: “This show is fantastic, even reaching greatness at times. It’s impressive how it manages to narrate a vast, epic tale spanning three timelines within five relatively brief episodes, and still offer fresh insights about a conflict.
With equal enthusiasm, Slate praised it as such: “It’s breathtakingly beautiful yet strangely displeasing, provoking strong emotions, leaving certain sections etched in my memory, and it inspired me to delve into an excellent piece of literature.
Simultaneously, The Guardian observed that the series is fueled by powerful acting and a bold assurance in its capacity to narrate this tale, on its own rhythm, in its unique style.
While discussing the project, Elordi shared his enthusiasm for collaborating with director Justin Kurzel, who he was thrilled to be working with on “The Narrow Road to the Deep North“.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Elordi referred to the filmmaker as his “film mentor”. He said, “For any Australian actor, and I believe this is true for all the boys in our show, there’s one director we aspire to collaborate with, and that’s Kurzel. Naturally, I wanted to return home and work with him.
