Don't have time for a 'WandaVision' rewatch? What you need to know for 'Agatha All Along'

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of immersing myself in the intricate tapestry of Marvel Cinematic Universe, I must say that Agatha Harkness’ return to our screens is nothing short of exhilarating! Her transformation from a seemingly sweet, elderly governess to a cunning and powerful witch has been a rollercoaster ride that I never saw coming.

Agatha Harkness is finally back.

In the aftermath of causing some chaos and ultimately disrupting Wanda Maximoff’s peaceful small-town family existence as portrayed in “WandaVision”, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most cunning and deceitful witch will step into the limelight for a new spinoff series titled “Agatha All Along“. This series premieres on Disney+ this Wednesday.

In the series, Kathryn Hahn plays the role of Agnes, a curious neighbor living next door to Wanda and Vision. However, this seemingly ordinary New Jersey housewife hides a secret identity – she is none other than Agatha Harkness, a formidable witch with magical powers. She was attracted to the neighborhood by Wanda’s supernatural abilities.

Typically, Marvel Studios has chosen to keep many details about their upcoming show hidden. “Agatha All Along” continues the storyline following the events of “WandaVision,” focusing on Agatha who is now powerless. The series is expected to portray Agatha relying on her old methods and making new allies in an attempt to return to her mischievous ways.

Before the release of “Agatha All Along,” let’s take a look back at Agatha, a character who hasn’t been featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time. Here’s a recap of her history, background, and other relevant details to get you up-to-speed.

Who is Agatha Harkness?

In Episode 8 of “WandaVision,” they unveil my past, Agatha. Back in Salem, Massachusetts all the way back in 1693, I was unfairly accused and tied to a stake. The charges against me were severe: betraying my coven, possessing knowledge beyond my years and social status, and dabbling in the darkest forms of sorcery.

In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, the climactic scene in “WandaVision’s” finale presents an intriguing twist: Agatha, who had previously begged for leniency claiming she merely bent the rules, found herself under attack by her coven, led by her own mother. However, instead of succumbing, Agatha harnessed all their magical powers in a desperate bid for survival, ultimately eliminating them. Agatha’s chilling statement, “My thing is to take power from the undeserving,” hints at a deeper, sinister motive behind her actions.

What was she up to in ‘WandaVision’?

In contrast to other Westview residents, Agatha comprehends that the town is under a spell and had been pretending to live in harmony with Wanda’s TV-like existence. Driven by curiosity over Wanda’s ability to manipulate reality, this ancient witch has secretly been meddling with the town’s happenings to uncover the secrets behind Wanda’s astonishing magical control of an entire New Jersey town. (It’s chilling: Agatha herself confesses to the heinous act of murdering Wanda’s beloved pet dog.)

In time, Agatha grows increasingly impatient and tries to coerce Wanda into disclosing her hidden powers. It turns out that mourning Wanda is a user of chaos magic, which makes her the legendary Scarlet Witch. Agatha’s greed for Wanda’s magical abilities leads to a spectacular magical confrontation in the climax of “WandaVision.

As a movie buff, I’ve witnessed their magical battles for centuries, but it seems that even with my extensive knowledge, the Scarlet Witch still outmatches Agatha. In an unexpected twist, Wanda employs one of Agatha’s own teachings to seize her magic entirely. Furthermore, Wanda harnesses her power to erase Agatha’s memories, allowing her to continue her days in Westview as the bothersome neighbor, Agnes, blissfully unaware of her true identity.

What has Agatha been doing since ‘WandaVision’?

Since the happenings of “WandaVision,” there’s been no hint about Agatha Harkness in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, it can be assumed that she continues to live her non-magical existence as Agnes without any supernatural powers.

Is Agatha like this in the comics?

First Steps,” a film previously released by 20th Century Fox but now owned by Disney.

Typically portrayed as an elder woman, Agatha serves as a potent sorceress who eventually lends aid to Wanda with her spells and forms a bond with her as both friend and guide. Despite being slain on multiple occasions throughout the years, she continues to manifest when required, even in spirit form. Her son, Nicholas Scratch, is a malevolent character who has engaged in conflicts with the Fantastic Four.

Agatha has been instrumental in several story arcs that delve into Wanda’s bond with her kids, Billy and Tommy. In the “Scarlet Witch” comics from 2015 to 2017, Agatha joins Wanda on her journey along the Witches’ Pathway.

What is ‘Agatha All Along’?

Following the occurrences of “WandaVision,” the spinoff series titled “Agatha All Along” will portray the titular witch joining forces with a gothic teen to assemble an unlikely group of witches who are outcasts, aiming to reclaim Agatha’s magical abilities. The series derives its name from the catchy tune penned by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez that unveiled Agatha’s true identity in “WandaVision” Episode 7.

The nine-episode series titled “WandaVision” was developed by Jac Schaeffer, who is also part of the cast alongside Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone, and Aubrey Plaza.

Wait, what happened to Wanda and Vision after ‘WandaVision’?

In the final episode of the series, Wanda was depicted poring over Agatha’s edition of the Darkhold, an ominous book of dark sorcery often called the Book of the Accursed. Her longing to be reunited with her children Billy and Tommy sets off the happenings in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2022). At the end, Wanda was shown destroying all copies of the Darkhold, only to be buried beneath a heap of debris while doing so.

In the finale of “WandaVision,” I, as a follower, witnessed the magical vision crafted by Wanda dissipate once she reversed the spell that manipulated Westview’s reality. However, the reconstituted Vision, programmed to confront Wanda, took flight from the town after regaining access to his past experiences as an Avenger. The next chapter in this Vision’s life will unfold in the upcoming series, “Vision Quest,” slated for release in 2026.
