Donny Osmond details close bond with Michael Jackson amid child star fame: ‘We got each other’
As a lifestyle expert, I find the life experiences of Donny Osmond to be nothing short of extraordinary. From his humble beginnings as a child star, rising to fame alongside the Jackson 5, to the highs and lows of his illustrious career spanning decades, there’s no denying that Donny has truly lived a life larger than life itself.
In the 1960s and 1970s, when they were both rising child stars, Donny Osmond has reminisced about his strong relationship with Michael Jackson.
As a die-hard admirer looking back, I find myself reminiscing about two extraordinary talents: the legendary Osmond, now 66 years old, and the one-of-a-kind King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It all started for both of them at the tender age of five. The Osmonds, my beloved family band, catapulted into stardom with yours truly being part of it. On the other hand, the Jackson 5, led by none other than the remarkable Michael, also embarked on their journey to fame and glory at that same young age.
In the limelight, these musicians ruled over the music world. They discovered mutual understanding through their shared journeys in the entertainment business. On the documentary titled “Larger than Life: Reign of the Boybands,” Osmond disclosed that the resemblance between the Osmonds and the Jackson family is strikingly similar.
In each family, there are a total of nine kids. Both Mike and I happen to be the seventh-born among these nine siblings. Furthermore, our mothers share the same birthday. Interestingly enough, Mike and I were born on the same day as well, making us the same age.
He stated: “Mike often shared tales about Joe [Jackson – his father] with me. Reflecting on the perils of the entertainment industry, be it a solo artist or a boyband, I’m not sure I could have endured show business without the support of my family.
Let’s gather and share laughter while recounting shared experiences and parallels. One time, Michael commented, “Donnie, you are the only individual in the universe who truly understands my childhood.
At just five years old, Donny started his professional journey by performing alongside his brothers on The Andy Williams Show. Later, in the 70s, when he was 13, music producers took notice of him, offering him opportunities to record solo albums. Among his most popular songs were “Go Away Little Girl” and “Puppy Love”.
Apart from being Osmond, he also shared the limelight with another star on their joint TV variety show titled “Donny and Marie.” This popular program aired from January 1976 until May 1979.
Following this point, Osmond’s career and financial situation began to decline. The artist attributes this to the fact that his wholesome music was not perceived as authentic by some.
His family suffered financial ruin due to a string of unsuccessful investments.
In 1989, his hit “Soldier of Love” served as a significant boost for his career’s resurgence. Some DJs initially hesitated to play the album due to Osmond’s bubblegum persona, while others played it secretly, referring to him as an enigmatic artist until he himself disclosed his involvement in the single to his fans.
Turning to acting, as well as singing, helped keep Osmond’s career going.
In 1982, his professional journey took a significant blow when the George M. Cohan musical “Little Johnny Jones” was simultaneously launched and shut down on the same day.
1992 saw him take on the lead role for Joseph and the Multi-colored Dreamcoat. His stint continued until 1998, during which he delivered a total of 2000 performances.
For over a decade, the musician has been a resident performer in Las Vegas alongside his sister, Marie, and between 2002 and 2004, he also hosted the television game show Pyramid.
Back in 1978, on May 8th, I was blessed to tie the knot with my beloved Debbie, a union that’s stood the test of time. Together, we’ve been fortunate enough to raise five wonderful sons.
Previously, Donny Osmond shared stories about his friendship with Michael Jackson. This bond was discussed following an Oscars party in the 1980s, a time when Jackson’s career was thriving, and according to Donny, he himself was close to his lowest point. During this period, Donny took Michael for a drive in a convertible car, and they went out for a meal together. Excitedly, Donny recalled, ‘We lowered the roof and there we were, Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond cruising down Sunset Boulevard, belting out songs!’
Instead of playing his songs on the radio, he approached Jackson when he faced rejection. ‘Jackson advised me to alter my stage name, claiming that Osmond was toxic. He proved accurate. Once I managed to secure another hit, it was due to listeners playing the track without acknowledging the singer. That moment was both joyful and tinged with sadness.’
Originally, we were planning to perform a duet together, but Donny contacted me saying, “Hey, I’ve got some issues with the media right now. Could we postpone our performance instead?
A while afterwards, Jackson contacted him in a troubled state, revealing he had departed on a tour bus with his children, seeking escape from everything. “I invited him over, the kids could play together, go for a swim,” he said. “I suggested he needed some quality family time.” Jackson replied, ‘That sounds nice,’ but didn’t follow through. He made poor decisions.’
