The long-running series “Blue Bloods” concluded towards the end of 2024 with the final Reagan family dinner, yet the autumn 2025 TV schedule will still feature the Reagans in a new capacity. CBS is debuting a fresh show titled “Boston Blue” where Danny relocates to Boston for a new career opportunity, a new work partner, and a completely different city compared to his established life in New York City. Although Danny will only have his son Sean around as a familiar figure in Boston, it’s clear that Donnie Wahlberg, the show’s lead actor, is thrilled to return to his hometown for filming.
Wahlberg openly acknowledged that the challenging aspect of shooting Boston Blue in his native city was portraying Danny as a New York fan. However, he also expressed his long-held ambition of producing a television series in Boston, making it seem genuine given his beaming smile and Fenway Park location during the interview with Intentional Talk. His Instagram countdown to the premiere of Boston Blue, along with his frequent posts, leave no doubt about his excitement for realizing his dream in Massachusetts.

In the video, did Donnie Wahlberg express any negative feelings towards New York? Absolutely not! However, his smile while donning a Red Sox jersey at Fenway Park suggests he’s thrilled to be back in Beantown without needing words. Furthermore, the Boston portion of the clip seemed to capture Mase’s “Welcome Back” in a more dynamic way. While it seems Donnie may not have disliked NYC, his enthusiasm for being in Boston during filming is evident.
During the same interview where he expressed that starring in a TV series set in Boston is his ultimate dream, he also mentioned enthusiastically taking on the role of a tour guide for his fellow new cast members. It’s clear he didn’t mind this responsibility one bit!
When Donnie Wahlberg joined the cast of Boston Blue, many of his costars were fresh faces to him. This included Sean Reagan, who was recast from Andrew Terraciano on Blue Bloods and is now played by Mika Amonsen, a veteran actor from Pachinko.
Bridget Moynahan will make a guest appearance as Erin Reagan in the premiere, but initial glimpses from CBS suggest that she, along with brother Danny Reagan, will spend time with his new partner’s family.
Fans of the streaming series “Star Trek: Discovery” (now airing on Paramount+) may recognize Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays Detective Lena Silver in the new Boston-based show opposite Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan. The first look photos feature the two leads dashing through famous Boston landmarks, including a cemetery. Rounding out the cast are Gloria Reuben as district attorney Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as police superintendent Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as rookie cop Jonah Silver, and Ernie Hudson as renowned Baptist pastor Reverend Edwin Peters.
As a die-hard fan of gritty crime dramas, I can’t contain my excitement for the highly anticipated series premiere of “Boston Blue” airing on Friday, October 17th at 10 p.m. ET. Catch it after two other must-watch shows – the series debut of “Sheriff Country” at 9 p.m. ET and the Season 4 return of “Fire Country” at 8 p.m. ET, all gracing our screens on CBS.
If you’re hankering for a glimpse into the early days of a familiar face from “Blue Bloods”, you might want to revisit that classic series streaming now on Paramount+. The newcomer, “Boston Blue”, has taken over the time slot previously occupied by “Blue Bloods”. So, grab your popcorn and get ready for an exhilarating ride!
