Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for Nintendo Switch: The Gorilla of Your Dreams is Back!

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD (Nintendo Switch, £49.99)

Verdict: Prime among primates

Initially, I found it hard to grasp the appeal or function of Donkey Kong among Nintendo’s iconic characters, preferring Mario over jungle-themed platforming games. However, my perspective changed after playing Donkey Kong Country Returns in 2010. That game made me appreciate Donkey Kong, and I believe it resonated with many others as well.

This platformer was an outstanding piece of work, bursting with vibrant colors, memorable characters, and challenging levels that provided a delightful test of skill within the jump-focused genre.

Now, Donkey Kong Country Returns is back again – this time with an enhanced, high-definition makeover exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

This item has not only survived time, but thrived in it. It’s as if time has playfully petted it and generously offered it countless bananas. Its quality remains exceptional.

The game becomes quite challenging, particularly beyond its initial quarter with approximately 80 levels. It demands a steady hand and precise timing in button presses. Furthermore, certain sections can be incredibly vexing, like the minecart sequences where even calm nerves and precision might not save you from repeated attempts. Be prepared for numerous game over scenarios.

It’s great news that Returns is such a fantastic game, with additional mini-challenges to keep you engaged. What’s more, it caters especially well to those of us less skilled (like myself), offering more accommodating features than ever before. After multiple attempts, you can even watch an expert player, known as Super Kong, complete the level on your behalf.

Beyond the high-definition graphics and fresh additions, there isn’t significantly more in the latest version compared to the original one. In fact, it seems we’ve reached the pinnacle with our simian friend back in 2010 – quite a feat! However, for someone like me, who has been eagerly awaiting this Kong update, it’s a bit underwhelming, to say the least.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins (PlayStation, Xbox, PC, £64.99)

 Verdict: Takes on all corners

With a single strike of my blade, whooshing through the air, a horde of one hundred foes are sent soaring aloft. In another spin, I let out a yelp as an additional hundred adversaries plunge into the mire.

Step into the world of Dynasty Warriors, a game series that has been sharing its thrilling “one against thousands” gameplay with various universes in recent times. You’ll find adaptations of Dynasty Warriors in the worlds of Zelda and Fire Emblem as well.

Now, the game titled Dynasty Warriors: Origins brings us right back to where it started – a storyline set in a mythological 3rd-century China. In many aspects, it seems to have returned to its peak performance as well.

In this scenario, it’s your task to take up a sword once wielded by a man named Ziluan, who seems to have lost his memory. You’ll use this weapon to cut through conflicting groups and bring unity to the… blah, blah, blah.

You get a sword from a guy named Ziluan who can’t remember things, and you need to use it to separate fighting sides and unite the… stuff.

In the latest installment of Origins, the developers have chosen to primarily emphasize Ziluan’s narrative, leaving behind multiple modes from past games. However, it’s unfortunate that this compelling tale seems to be filled with familiar tropes.

Despite the emphasis on storytelling, it’s likely that many individuals will attend primarily for the lively, humorous moments. It is in these areas where Origins truly excels.

Absolutely, the fights have undergone a visual enhancement. Now, it’s tough not to pause and be amazed as you dash forward, guided by beams of light, toward the countless lines of soldiers in front.

However, they’ve additionally been equipped with mechanical enhancements, providing increased control over your allied forces. This proves beneficial given that not only regular foes, but also the bosses appear smarter and more persistent than previously encountered.

The overall feel is more strategically challenging than anticipated. Indeed, every swing of your sword sends many flying, but it’s your mind that’s putting in most of the effort.
