On Friday night, November 14, 2025, President Donald Trump announced on Air Force One that he plans to sue the BBC for a large sum of money. This action stems from a Panorama documentary produced by the BBC, which included a selectively edited version of his January 6, 2021 speech. Trump believes the altered footage was used to harm his public image.
Even though the BBC issued a public apology to Donald Trump, he doesn’t seem willing to accept it. He told reporters he plans to sue the BBC for between $1 billion and $5 billion, likely next week. He explained that a lawsuit is necessary, apology or not, because he believes the BBC misrepresented his words. “They cheated,” he stated, “they changed what I actually said.”
On November 13, 2025, BBC Chair Samir Shah publicly took responsibility for a misleading edit the company made. He apologized for the way the edit made Donald Trump appear to endorse violence and assured the public that the altered speech would never be aired again.
We understand our edit made it seem like we presented one unbroken part of the speech, when actually it was made up of clips from various moments. This led viewers to incorrectly believe President Trump directly called for violence.
The BBC wants to sincerely apologize to President Trump for a mistake in airing the program. It wasn’t meant to be shown again, and won’t be broadcast in its current form on any BBC channel or platform.
The BBC stated they were truly sorry for the situation, but they don’t believe Trump has grounds to sue for defamation. They emphasized that their apology and decision to remove the documentary should be considered sufficient, and they will not be providing any financial compensation to the President.
The controversy surrounding the Panorama documentary has resulted in the resignations of two BBC executives. Tim Davie, the BBC’s director general with two decades of service, and Deborah Turness, the head of BBC News, both stepped down soon after Donald Trump responded to the broadcast footage.
