Donald Glover wants to bring "fun" back to Star Wars with his Lando movie

As a gamer with decades of Star Wars adventures under my belt, I must admit that the recent shift towards a more serious tone has been noticeable and, at times, a tad disheartening. Don’t get me wrong, the original trilogy had its share of heavy moments, but it was always balanced by the fun, the humor, and the camaraderie between characters like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian.

It appears that Donald Glover, who played the roguish Lando Calrissian in 2018’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” feels that the “Star Wars” franchise has become too serious. He aims to inject some humor and light-heartedness into his upcoming “Lando” project, stating, “Sometimes it’s way too serious… I want to bring fun to ‘Star Wars.’ I just want it to be fun.

Is it possible that the Star Wars series has grown too somber? Initially, it was a thrilling journey filled with chattering droids, glowing lightsabers, and cuddly teddy bears from the moon of Endor, who also happened to be fierce warriors. However, there were moments of gravity as well, such as limbs being severed and characters grappling with their paternal conflicts. The prequel trilogy was more serious, culminating in the main character being consumed by fire on the edge of a volcano. Since then, the franchise has experienced periods of both intense heat and coolness. A series like Andor seems to be the most solemn thing ever produced within the Star Wars universe, while the upcoming Skeleton Crew appears to be a lighthearted adventure for all ages.

Glover emphasized, “I simply want it to be enjoyable.” As a fellow enthusiast of ‘Star Wars’, I believe it’s crucial to ensure that the experience is filled with enjoyment.

It’s very hard to have fun right now. It’s tough because there are very serious things happening and those are the only things that connect us, weirdly. So I get why things are serious, but part of the human experience, I believe, is we have a responsibility to have enjoyment. And I just feel like we’re lacking in that department.

It seems unlikely that anyone would object to enjoying themselves; the Star Wars franchise has demonstrated its ability to encompass diverse moods. However, the real test may be whether these plans will come to fruition. While Glover might be planning the most entertaining movie ever, it’s worth noting that several Star Wars movie projects have failed to materialize over time, including Rian Johnson’s proposed trilogy, another trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, a Rogue Squadron movie from Kathleen Kennedy, and a Star Wars film by Taika Waititi. All were announced but later put on hold, at least for the time being. I won’t truly believe we’re getting a new Star Wars movie until I see it playing in the cinema.

The upcoming “Lando” movie appears to be progressing smoothly, despite experiencing some modifications along the way; initially, it was planned as a television series. As of now, a release date hasn’t been announced, but Donald Glover’s optimistic outlook can certainly bring good vibes.
