Donald Glover cancels Childish Gambino tour over health concerns: 'Need time out to heal'

As a long-time cinephile and music enthusiast who has witnessed the meteoric rise of Donald Glover from his humble beginnings to Hollywood stardom, I must say it’s always bittersweet to see such a talented artist take a step back to prioritize their health. Having followed his career closely, I can attest that Glover has consistently pushed himself to the brink for his art, and it’s heartening to see him make the difficult decision to focus on healing.

As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve got some news to share – I, Donald Glover, have decided to cancel the rest of my Childish Gambino tour dates due to a need for my personal wellbeing. This includes an upcoming medical procedure I must undergo.

On Friday, the Grammy-winning artist behind “This Is America” and the star of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” shared that he’s had to postpone shows in Europe and Australia due to health issues. Earlier this month, he was admitted to a hospital in Houston for tests concerning an ailment that had become noticeable.

He explained further, “It was determined that I wouldn’t be able to give a performance that evening, and subsequent examinations revealed I couldn’t complete the entire U.S. tour within the given timeframe.

In September, Glover delayed his New World tour, which included multiple shows at Crypto.com Arena, “to devote some time to addressing my physical health issues.” Initially, the “Community” star was scheduled to wrap up the North American leg of his tour this week before moving on to international shows. However, he now mentions that “I must address my recovery process more seriously.

41-year-old Glover declined to share further details about his health issues in his recent statement. At this time, a representative for the versatile talent has yet to provide additional information when contacted by The Times.

Glover stated that it was a tough call to end the remaining performances of the tour. He also mentioned that fans could request refunds from where they initially bought their tickets. However, the specific timeline for resuming the shows is uncertain. Yet, he expressed his strong desire to entertain the audience again as soon as possible.

“Until then, thanks for love, privacy and support,” he said.

The New World tour marked Glover’s return to live performances since 2019, potentially his last as the musical persona Childish Gambino. It was under this name that he first made waves in the music industry. As Childish Gambino, Donald Glover garnered 12 Grammy nominations and took home five awards, with four of them for the powerful song “This Is America.

In July, Donald Glover (also known as Childish Gambino) unveiled his last album under that moniker, titled “Bando Stone & the New World.” A month before, he announced his readiness to depart from that phase of his career and move forward. Speaking with The New York Times, he expressed that the work was no longer satisfying and he felt he no longer needed to continue building in that manner.

He mentioned that the choice to retire his character was partly driven by the fact he became a father, having a son with his wife Michelle White.

When I hoist my son up onto my shoulders, it fills me with profound happiness – a genuine sentiment. He continued, “In the end, nobody will ever reminisce about missed opportunities to be sincere and authentic; instead they’ll say, ‘I wish I hadn’t been afraid of appearing awkward.’
