Don Cheadle, Brie Larson react to Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom: “What the f***”
As a gamer who has grown up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this latest twist has left me utterly spellbound! Robert Downey Jr.’s transformation from Iron Man to Doctor Doom is like a comic book coming to life – if not a tad unexpected.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Downey Jr.’s reveal as Doctor Doom is now one of the most iconic Marvel images ever. This unexpected announcement left even Downey Jr.’s previous co-stars in a state of surprise, as many of them had not been privy to this astonishing twist beforehand.
Without a doubt, Robert Downey Jr. is famously recognized for his extraordinary portrayal of Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He kick-started the series and served as its pulsating core from its inception up until Avengers: Endgame. Many speculated that he might return to the role of Iron Man at some point. While it wasn’t entirely impossible, what no one anticipated was him assuming the crucial part of Doctor Doom, who will now be the primary antagonist moving forward in the franchise. She clarified to The Playlist, “I want to make it clear. I had just spoken with Kevin [Feige]. It felt like that very same day. And he casually mentioned, ‘Oh yes, we’re planning something for Comic-Con.’ But he definitely didn’t hint at that at all! Absolutely not!
Robert Downey Jr. explains why he wanted to return to the MCU
It came as a surprise when Robert Downey Jr. didn’t anticipate rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe so quickly, and even more unexpected was the prospect of him debuting as a fresh character. However, it appears that Downey has been keen on revisiting Marvel for some time now, but he desired to do it in an appropriate manner. Reviving Tony Stark, especially at such a swift pace, seemed like it would undermine the satisfying ending his character had in Endgame.
When producer Kevin Feige introduced the concept of Doctor Doom, it immediately piqued Robert Downey Jr.’s curiosity. He wondered, “How can we avoid falling short? How can we surpass expectations? And that’s when Kevin Feige mentioned Victor Von Doom,” as he shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I was like, ‘wow.’ Later on, [Feige] goes, ‘Let’s get Victor Von Doom right. Let’s get that right.’ So then I said to Kevin, ‘Can I go talk to Bob Iger?’ He goes, ‘About [what]?’ I go, ‘About everything.’ And I [went] to Bob’s house, which—I don’t know how to describe that experience. I’ve had a lot of really cool experiences. We go to Iger’s pad and we sit down and start saying, ‘I just really want to be…’ He goes, ‘I like it.’ He likes it.”
