Will there be a Wicked 3?
As of today, a third Wicked movie hasn’t been officially announced, and it’s unclear what it would be about. Wicked: For Good concludes the story told in the musical, and while the ending leaves a little room for imagination, it mostly feels complete.
In Hollywood, plans can always change if a project stands to make more money. While Gregory Maguire wrote three follow-up books to his original novel Wicked – the source material for the musical – significant differences between the books and the musical make it difficult to adapt his sequel, Son of a Witch, directly.
A third Wicked movie would probably need to be a completely new story. Director Jon M. Chu hinted to Variety that they’re exploring lots of different ideas. However, he also told Access Hollywood that the plan was always to tell the story in just two films, so it’s uncertain if another movie will happen.
If Wicked: For Good is incredibly successful, it would be surprising if they didn’t make another movie set in Oz eventually, even though the first film doesn’t have a scene hinting at a sequel.
