How to Train Your Dragon post-credit scene explained

If you’re not particularly passionate about the world of “How to Train Your Dragon,” it’s safe to suggest that the post-credits scene might not be crucial viewing for you.

Instead of continuing the narrative in a manner similar to the animated sequel, the scene finds Hiccup leafing through his journal, revealing a drawing of Toothless against the backdrop of the Book of Dragons.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my observation that it seems like Hiccup was all set to draw Toothless in the Book of Dragons, yet alas! The fleeting credit scene didn’t provide enough time for us to witness this magical moment unfold.

In essence, there’s nothing significant or crucial added in the end credits of the “How to Train Your Dragon” movie, so it’s perfectly fine if you happened to have missed it.

Before the story unfolds, you’ll catch a glimpse of breathtaking real-world filming locations in some aerial shots during the credits. These scenes offer a sneak peek before we delve deeper into the Book of Dragons. So even before the main event, there’s something visually appealing to keep you engaged.

How to Train Your Dragon tribute explained

Should you decide to wait until the closing credits, you’ll discover that the movie “How to Train Your Dragon” is a tribute, in fond remembrance, to Margaret Coll.

In a heartfelt tribute, I found myself moved to honor Gerard Butler’s beloved mother, Margaret Coll, who passed away at the tender age of 81 in February 2025. The touching idea was brought forth by director Dean DeBlois, and so it was that the movie we worked on together became a heartfelt dedication to this extraordinary woman.

He shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he first discussed the idea with the studio to gauge their reaction, prior to informing him about it. He acknowledged that the death of his mother was a profoundly painful experience for him and that he was finding it difficult to cope.

It felt fitting at that moment to acknowledge her by including a tribute in the credits.
