Does Harlan Coben’s new Netflix show Missing You live up to Fool Me Once?
As a connoisseur of gripping mysteries and captivating characters, I must say that Harlan Coben’s Netflix production, Missing You, has truly left an indelible mark on my television-viewing heart. Rosalind Eleazar’s portrayal of Kat Donovan is nothing short of exceptional, embodying a character as complex and multifaceted as a fine wine that only improves with age.
Harlan Coben’s Netflix series, “Fool Me Once,” left viewers yearning for each of Michelle Keegan’s stylish coats. Beyond that, it presented a compelling mystery, with various complex strands unraveling to reveal the identity of Joe’s killer.
This time around, it’s Keegan who significantly contributes to the show’s skyrocketing popularity as audiences find themselves captivated by her portrayal of the resilient and formidable character, Maya.
Instead of “Missing You,” you is a New Year’s gift, aspiring to achieve similar success on its own terms.
His return coincides with a renewed interest in the unsolved case of her father’s homicide, stirred by recent developments. The resonance of Josh being back sends Kat spiraling deeper into a perilous quest for the truth.
One aspect where the story Fool Me Once aligns perfectly with Missing You is their focus on richly developed characters. From the very beginning, it’s hard not to be captivated by Eleazar’s Kat, a character brimming with intricate feelings.
Kat Donovan evokes deep emotions and abundant compassion, almost as if through poetry. In the way Eleazar portrays Kat, there’s a delicate balance between vulnerability and strength, tenderness and defense. Each action of Kat’s is driven by strong will and intense passion.
In episodes one and five, Eleazar’s emotional shifts are most clearly demonstrated. A complex mix of vulnerability, rage, revulsion, and love resides within her as she grapples with challenging realities, creating a sense of inner turmoil.
As a gamer, what truly makes “Missing You” stand out for me is the unique perspective from which its narrative unfolds. It’s like stepping into different worlds and experiencing the story through various pairs of eyes, making each moment feel fresh and engaging.
The main cast, largely comprised of Black actors such as Walters, Jessica Plummer, Lenny Henry, and Jo Martin, infuses the show with a rich cultural tapestry. It’s in the subtle details where this is most evident: for instance, Kat’s hair losing its bounce when it gets wet from the fire sprinklers, or the ‘Candy’ dance that is traditionally performed at every Black gathering.
Celebrating Black culture in a heartwarming manner is often achieved through the presence of “aunties.” Kat’s group of nurturing, caring elder women, who alongside her biological mother, provide support for her. They ask personal questions yet also express affection and fortify her. These scenes are authentic, resonant, relatable, and filled with warmth.
The movie’s visual and auditory elements also contribute significantly: the gentle illumination that suggests warmth, and soothing melodies that seem to echo their joy throughout the scenes. The infectious atmosphere they create makes one feel as if attending a heartwarming family reunion, where loved ones are catching up.
During discussions about the “Missing You” series, its writer Victoria Asare-Archer shared insights at a viewing and question-and-answer session that Digital Spy was part of:
This opportunity allows us to create extraordinary tales for some of the top Black performers in the industry right now. Not only are we showcasing these talented individuals on screen, but also those who work backstage, she emphasized.
In this production, we have not one but two exceptional color directors. We ensured diversity in various aspects such as sound, makeup, costumes, and throughout the entire project. If we manage to achieve this in one of Netflix’s major shows (fingers crossed), it’s truly remarkable.
The show’s inclusive portrayal transcends racial boundaries, particularly through the series “Missing You,” where Aqua’s (Mary Malone) queer identity is thoughtfully intertwined with another character’s, thereby enriching their conversations with substance and depth.
Flo, one of Kat’s elderly mentors, rejoices in successfully defending her thesis, marking her as a doctor; this underscores the series’ deliberate embrace of diversity. It’s merely a subtle recognition that even at an age commonly considered retirement, individuals can still achieve significant milestones.
The show’s weakness lies in its own mystery. It contains numerous false leads that entice viewers to guess wrongly, but these attempts at deception seem overzealous.
As I delved into this game, the gripping tale of the vanished individuals held my attention from start to finish. Steve Pemberton, playing Titus, delivered a captivating performance that left quite an impression on me. The same could be said for Rudi Dharmalingam as Rishi and Oscar Kennedy as Brendan – their portrayals were nothing short of remarkable. Each actor brought something unique to the table, making this narrative even more immersive and engaging.
Although it’s connected to the larger narrative, the link seems somewhat loose. Granted, there were some unexpected elements throughout the show, but the ‘whodunit’ part appeared quite straightforward. As a result, while the mini-series begins and concludes with intensity, the pace in the middle slows down.
Despite some noticeable lack of on-screen chemistry between Walters and Eleazar, their exceptional acting skills make it understandable and almost forgettable.
That’s all we’re willing to say on that before we reach spoiler territory.
All episodes of Missing You are available to watch now on Netflix.
