Does Happy Gilmore 2 live up to the original movie? Here’s the first reviews

The long-awaited second installment of the classic comedy “Happy Gilmore,” starring Adam Sandler, is now available on Netflix. Critics are offering their thoughts.

Gathering a range of opinions, the second part brings back Adam Sandler alongside his co-stars from 1996 – Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Ben Stiller.

The narrative unfolds around Happy, who finds himself in a tough spot financially. To cover the expenses for Sunny Sandler’s (Vienna) enrollment at a prestigious ballet school in Paris, he decides to come out of retirement.

IndieWire commented by grading the film a B-, saying “The shot is usually made more frequently than not,” and praised Sandler for his comedic skills, pointing out: “It’s also often quite amusing. The majority of that humor can be attributed to Sandler, who returns to playing Happy with a sense of effortless comfort.

Agreeing with this viewpoint, Consequence deemed Happy Gilmore 2 as a “sturdy foundation for a sequel upholding tradition” and found it “innovative enough in its narrative to avoid feeling like a complete retread”.

As a dedicated gamer, I’d say the movie delivers a sharp dose of nostalgia, yet it’s definitely got a modern kick to it.

The magazine asserts that it is not a mere imitation or an update of the brand of slapstick humor that made Sandler famous in the ’90s. Instead, they claim it is the authentic return, a genuine revival showcasing Sandler’s Jerry Lewis-inspired, rock ‘n’ roll fueled fury.

In terms of Slash Film, they’ve labeled the sequel as a tiresome comedy with little to no emotional depth. It seems overloaded with professional golfers and unnecessary appearances instead of delivering genuine humor.

In the process, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Happy Gilmore 2 appears overly uninspired and self-centered, particularly Adam Sandler’s habit of enlisting virtually everyone he has ever collaborated with or encountered. The abundance of cameos in this film is so extensive that it necessitates a reference guide to follow along, although the majority of them fail to leave a lasting impact.

Although THR labeled the movie as “awful,” the magazine speculates that due to its being “mindless, humorless, and excessively crude,” enthusiasts of the initial film will find it “enjoyable.

Happy Gilmore 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
