Does And Just Like That Remember What Happened in Sex and the City?
Recently, a video circulated showing Sarah Jessica Parker seemingly unaware of an iconic “Hungover Miranda” episode from Sex and the City. This moment, extracted from a BuzzFeed roundtable discussion with Parker and her costars Cynthia Nixon (Miranda), Kristin Davis (Charlotte), and Sarita Choudhury (Seema), sparked frustration among fans on TikTok who noted Parker’s apparent lack of familiarity with the original series. This admission followed a May interview with E! News where Parker admitted to not having seen “most of” Sex and the City and avoiding And Just Like That.
Although Parker serves as an executive producer, it’s clear that they don’t hold sole creative authority over the series And Just Like That. As we approach season 3, the spin-off has taken some bold steps – like the Che Diaz situation, for instance – while generally maintaining the essence of its predecessor. However, after the events in episode 4, it seems that those responsible for And Just Like That may have forgotten the immense success of the original series altogether.
Titled “Apples to Apples,” the fourth episode of Season 3 predominantly unfolds in Norfolk, Virginia, at the countryside farmhouse of Aidan Shaw (John Corbett), who has elevated his status since compelling Carrie to spend a weekend at his, let’s call it, rustic cabin. This incident occurred in Season 4 of Sex and the City, where we saw a Carrie that was familiar, one who reacted to squirrels, traversed state lines for cell service and fast food, and surprisingly invited her former lover Big (Chris Noth)—the same one she had previously betrayed with—to extend his stay overnight. The countryside simply wasn’t for her. As she put it, “I’m what you call a true city girl.
This weekend, Carrie behaves quite differently from her usual self. Instead of her typical actions, she helps Aidan’s son Wyatt by secretly bringing Adderall, a favor Kathy had asked without Aidan knowing. During the weekend, she engages in activities such as fishing, riding an ATV, family game night, and wearing clothes from the local boutique Daisy’s Dress Shop (as it turns out, Target is an hour away). Throughout this change, she barely makes a sarcastic comment about disliking simple life. She avoids expressing feelings of being trapped in a small town, finding the quietness overwhelming, or her longing for cocktail parties and shopping sales.
Absolutely, it’s possible to claim that since it’s been 20 years since “Sex and the City,” characters like Carrie may have evolved over time. However, most viewers aren’t tuning into “And Just Like That” to witness Carrie growing up. In fact, it could be problematic if her growth results in a complete transformation from the Carrie we both adore, criticize, and love to criticize. Many fans of “Sex and the City” are interested in following Carrie’s ongoing, chaotic, and glamorous life as a somewhat oblivious Manhattan socialite, despite her apparent detachment from reality.
In Sex and the City, Carrie and Aidan split up more than once, and even though Big is no longer in the picture, their relationship doesn’t appear to be a perfect fit. Just Like That adds to their troubles by introducing over 300 miles of distance, a troubled teenager, and mismatched texting habits. Remarkably, despite Aidan being unable to guarantee Carrie much in return, Episode 4 sees her deciding to maintain a long-distance relationship with him for the next five years. Given that Aidan needs to focus on his children’s wellbeing, it seems like the old Carrie might have interpreted this as a signal that perhaps they aren’t meant to be, at least for now.
In the same vein as when Miranda advised Carrie prior to her first visit to the countryside so many years back, if one feels compelled to assume a false identity to maintain a relationship, maybe it’s not an ideal match. It’s intriguing to ponder whether And Just Like That will ever heed that counsel.
