On Monday evening, Doechii claimed her first BET Award as the Best Female Hip Hop Artist, and during her acceptance speech, she addressed the ongoing tension regarding ICE raids in Los Angeles.
26-year-old Tampa rapper Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon clinched the award, outshining artists such as Cardi B, Doja Cat, GloRilla, Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Rapsody, and Sexyy Red at a ceremony held at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
She ascended onto the stage to receive her accolade, expressing gratitude towards the BET network, further mentioning that it was her inaugural BET Award, making it particularly significant for her.
She shared that she spent her childhood years watching this. She expressed gratitude towards the incredibly hardworking, exceptionally talented, and creatively brilliant girls in her category. Ladies, you are truly remarkable. Therefore, I would like to extend my thanks to BET for bestowing me with this honor.
In a more somber tone, she addressed the ongoing demonstrations in downtown Los Angeles regarding the issue of mass deportations and ICE raids. This situation prompted President Donald Trump’s decision to mobilize the National Guard, an action that has stirred debate.
She graciously acknowledged the honor of receiving the award, but quickly shifted focus to the ongoing situation outside the building, which she addressed as the audience applauded.
In simpler terms, there are brutal actions being carried out under the guise of “Law & Order,” causing terror and confusion within our neighborhoods. Trump has deployed armed forces to quell a demonstration.
She noted that whenever we express our democratic freedom through protests, it seems as though the military is being used against us, and this is a form of government worth reflecting upon.
She stated, “What kind of rule does that nation have? The way people are being forcefully separated from their loved ones deeply concerns me, and I believe as an artist, it’s my duty to voice my support for those who suffer oppression.” This was met with even greater approval.
In reference to individuals of African descent, Latin origin, transgender community, and those residing in Gaza, let’s live with optimism rather than fear. I hope we unite as one. My fellow human beings, let us fight together against hatred, and express our dissent towards it. Thank you, BET! was her final message.
Crystal Renee took to the stage to present Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, which was won by SZA.
Despite not being physically present at the event, she managed to outshine Ari Lennox, Ayra Starr, Coco Jones, Kehlani, Muni Long, Summer Walker, and Victoria Monet in the competition.
