Dodgers-Yankees World Series scores close to 16 million viewers for Fox, a seven-year high
As a die-hard sports enthusiast who has witnessed numerous World Series battles throughout my years of passionate fandom, I must say that this year’s Dodgers vs. Yankees showdown was nothing short of electrifying! The energy and excitement were palpable, with every pitch and swing leaving me on the edge of my seat.
The highly anticipated World Series game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees significantly increased Fox’s expected television viewership.
According to Nielsen’s data, the five-game series, which ended on Wednesday with the Dodgers securing a thrilling 7-6 victory, attracted an average of 15.8 million viewers.
This year’s five-game series has seen a significant increase of 74%, with the Texas Rangers surpassing the Arizona Diamondbacks, compared to last year’s series.
The five-game series between the Dodgers and Yankees attracted the largest audience for such a series since 2015, with an average of 14.5 million viewers tuning in to watch the Kansas City Royals defeat the New York Mets. This was the most-watched World Series, regardless of length, since the Houston Astros defeated the Dodgers in seven games in 2017.
The fox gained advantages by having teams in the top two television markets, as it provided a stage for baseball’s leading performers, Shohei Ohtani from the Dodgers and Aaron Judge from the Yankees. These stars are strongly considered front-runners for the most valuable player award in their respective leagues.
In my humble opinion, the last time I witnessed a World Series showdown between the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers and the legendary New York Yankees was back in 1981. Remarkably, the Dodgers emerged victorious, clinching the Series with a convincing four games to two scoreline.
Instead of witnessing a conclusive Game 7 of the World Series in 2024, Fox was unable to due to the briefness of the series. Historically, such games have attracted up to 40 million viewers. However, each game of this particular series was ahead of similar matches in recent years in terms of pace.
On a national scale, an average of 18.6 million people tuned in for Wednesday’s decisive match. In the Los Angeles market, this game was viewed by 21.1% of television households, while in New York, 14.8% of TV homes tuned in.
In simpler terms, out of all the games played so far, Game 4 was the only one that the Yankees won and it was viewed by approximately 16.3 million people, making it the most-viewed World Series game since 2019.
Game 3 of the Fall Classic drew a larger audience than an NFL “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants on ABC and ESPN. The 13.6 million viewers who chose to watch Fox exceeded the 13.4 million people who tuned in for the Steelers’ 26-18 victory over the Giants.
