Doctor Who’s War Master Derek Jacobi set to return in 2025

As a long-time Whovian with memories of hiding behind the sofa during the terrifying Dalek episodes, the news that Sir Derek Jacobi is returning as the Master in new Doctor Who audio stories has sent shivers of excitement down my spine! The Master’s cunning schemes and devious plots have always been a highlight of the show, and I can’t wait to see what he gets up to in these new adventures.

Legendary actor, Sir Derek Jacobi, is making his comeback to the Doctor Who universe with a fresh lineup of audiobook tales for Big Finish’s Doctor Who series.

In October 2025 and October 2026, the actor will once again take on his character as War Master in two fresh audio collections, which are scheduled for release.

In the 2022 audio series collection titled “The War Master: Self-Defence“, the character makes a return, this time sharing the stage once more with David Tennant’s portrayal of the Tenth Doctor, marking 15 years since their confrontation in the 2007 episode famously known as ‘Utopia’.

Two fresh audio productions, named “His Greatest Trick” and “Deeds Without Names,” are in line for release. Each series will encompass a total of four captivating installments, where Jacobi’s malevolent Time Lord embarks on a thrilling pursuit through time and the cosmos at large.

In the beginning of a new journey, a Time Lord from the renowned planet Gallifrey, known as the Master, has grown so perilous that all parties in the Time War concur on a single point: the Master needs to be eliminated!

Faced with the relentless pursuit by both the Time Lords and the Daleks who wish him gone, the Master chooses to escape the Time War. Instead of hiding, he embarks on an odyssey across time and space. Since his end may be imminent, why not indulge in a bit of disorder before it’s all over?

His Greatest Trick will release next October, while Deeds Without Names is set to arrive in October 2026.

The two collector’s editions, in the form of CD box sets, can be pre-ordered for £30.99 apiece, while digital versions are also available for purchase at £24.99 each.

In his return, Jacobi described the role as being quite captivating, with both intense and humorous aspects. He occasionally shows signs of arrogance, but he’s also complex, having multiple dimensions.

“And he’s a wicked old fart, isn’t he? The hero who’s a knight in shining armour is really a boring old sod. He’s got to have faults, and the Master’s full of faults.”

The television series “Doctor Who” is broadcast on BBC One within the United Kingdom, while it can be found on Disney+ internationally. For those in the UK, classic episodes of “Doctor Who” are accessible via BBC iPlayer.
