Doctor Who’s Varada Sethu reveals serious audition mistake
In her own words, Varada Sethu, the newest companion on Doctor Who, disclosed a significant blunder she committed during what she believed was her audition process.
Tonight on The One Show, Sethu confessed that she hadn’t needed to audition for the part of Belinda Chandra; however, this wasn’t something she knew during the audition process itself.
The actress admitted that she didn’t know some supporting actors were invited back to the Whoniverse to take on fresh roles (having portrayed Mundy Flynn in season 14 earlier), so she was taken aback when she received a call from the Doctor Who team, asking her to meet with showrunner Russell T Davies for the upcoming season.

She explained that when she received the phone call, it seemed somewhat unclear. It was as if they were saying, ‘Perhaps, possibly, might you consider meeting Russell to discuss the possibility of becoming a companion?’ In her understanding, it sounded like an audition.
As a gamer, I eagerly walked in, pumped up by my tunes, all set to impress with my pitch. Then there I was, listening intently as Russell unraveled the entire season’s narrative arc. And in that moment, it dawned on me, “Wow, this is confidential data! Sharing such secrets in an audition feels like unlocking a never-before-seen level of gameplay!
It finally dawned on her that she had been given the part of Belinda. “That’s when it hit me, ‘Aha! I realized this is an offer, not an audition,'” she explained with a chuckle at Gutwi’s expense.
Back in July, it was officially announced that Sethu would be part of the show. Since then, she’s expressed her satisfaction with the progressive direction the recent season of this long-standing BBC series has taken.
She mentioned that there have been a few instances related to Doctor Woke [references], but she feels confident that they are on the right track when they receive such comments. She expressed this sentiment while speaking with Radio Times about the upcoming episodes, which will start airing on April 12.
To be ‘woke’ essentially signifies being open-minded, empathetic, and advocating for others. As for Doctor Who, at its heart lies compassion, love, and a strong sense of justice.
In the United Kingdom, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can find it on Disney+. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who are accessible on BBC iPlayer.
