The new Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, has a release date! The BBC has also shared some initial photos giving fans a first look at the show’s impressive cast.
The new series, created by the showrunner of Doctor Who, Russell T Davies, will debut on BBC One and iPlayer this December. The specific release date will be announced soon.
The highly anticipated five-part series has revealed some new actors joining the cast. Russell Tovey, known for his role in Years and Years, will play Barclay, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (from Loki) will star as Salt. Jemma Redgrave is also returning to reprise her role as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

Dylan Holmes Williams directed The War Between the Land and the Sea, with Lorne Balfe composing the music. The series was written and executive produced by Russell T Davies and Pete McTighe.
Davies described the upcoming Christmas special as a grand and exciting event, promising a story filled with heroic characters, fantastical creatures, thrilling conflicts, and heartwarming romance, all set in a world facing imminent danger. He also added a mysterious warning: ‘Keep an eye on the seas!’
This new series follows UNIT, a taskforce working to stop a worldwide war after the Sea Devils, an ancient race, emerge and make contact with humans.
To build excitement for its December debut, the show has shared a trailer and initial photos of Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the Sea Devil character Salt, Arthur Tovey as Barclay, and Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, the head of UNIT.

Besides The War Between the Land and the Sea, another series is growing the Doctor Who universe. This new show, an animated program for BBC’s CBeebies channel, doesn’t have a title yet.
Doctor Who will return for a new season during the 2026 holiday season. This time, the BBC will be producing the episodes on its own, ending its previous co-production arrangement with Disney.
