Doctor Who’s Russell T Davies explains how show hasn’t “severed its roots”
As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I can’t help but feel excited and nostalgic about Russell T Davies‘ recent announcement that the show hasn’t strayed too far from its roots since moving to Disney+. The return of iconic monsters like Sutekh in the latest season is a deliberate move to assure fans that the essence of the show remains the same, while also providing a thrill for new viewers discovering these classic characters.
According to “Doctor Who” showrunner Russell T Davies, the show hasn’t lost touch with its origins despite its transfer to Disney.
In the fourteenth season’s fourteen episode titled “The Legend of Ruby Sunday,” broadcasted not so long ago, viewers were thrilled to witness the unexpected comeback of the franchise’s most recognized monster, Sutekh the Destructor.
In an interview with “Doctor Who Magazine,” Davies shared his reasoning behind incorporating the classic character Sutekh. He wanted to reassure fans that the essence of the show remains the same.
“Nicola Shindler, a producer I collaborate with, was thrilled beyond belief when Agatha Harkness appeared in ‘WandaVision.’ According to Davies, she considered it an exceptionally clever surprise.”
“I inquired if she was familiar with Agatha Harkness. She replied, ‘I’m sorry, I don’t recognize that name.’ It intrigues me how introducing an unfamiliar character from the lore can still create excitement for a viewer.”
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but be excited about the latest update to my favorite show, now available on Disney Plus. It’s no accident that we’ve decided to reintroduce an age-old adversary from the BBC days – and even brought back the same talented actor, Gabriel Woolf, to remind us of our rich past. Delving into a character’s history can be a fascinating journey. For newcomers, it offers intriguing background information that enriches their viewing experience. And for long-term fans like me, it’s a satisfying reward to see these connections and continuities unfold.
The showrunner shared that advanced technology now facilitates the return of previous Doctor Who characters more smoothly. Fans have easy access to learning about their histories.
“Also, you’re guaranteed that the internet will do your work for you,” he added.
“Previously, one could question whether people would recognize the name Sutekh. But now, you can find him prominently featured on our website and social media platforms, specifically Instagram. A simple Google search or check on Wikipedia will reveal a wealth of information about this historical figure.”
In the United Kingdom, you can watch “Doctor Who” on BBC One, while people in other regions can find it on Disney+. For those in the UK, old episodes of “Doctor Who” are accessible on BBC iPlayer.
