Doctor Who’s return reportedly delayed as “spectacular” special said to be ‘pushed back’

Fans of Doctor Who may have to wait until Easter 2027 to see the new Christmas special. Although previously described as “spectacular,” the episode is delayed while the show searches for its next lead actor. The Christmas special has traditionally been a key part of the show’s revival.

After Ncuti Gatwa finished his run as the Fifteenth Doctor, Billie Piper came back to Doctor Who. She used to play Rose Tyler, a companion to the Doctor, and her return involved a surprising transformation that hinted she—or a brand new character—might become the next Time Lord (or Lady).

It’s still unknown what role Piper will have in the future of Doctor Who. We don’t yet know if she’ll continue playing the Doctor, or if a different actor will take on the role of the Fifteenth Doctor.

I just read that the Christmas special might not happen when we expect it! The Sun is reporting that because they’re still looking for the next Doctor, the special could be delayed until Easter next year. It’s a bit disappointing, but hopefully, it means they’ll find the perfect person for the role, even if we have to wait a little longer!

The BBC declined to comment when approached by Digital Spy.

Although the airdate isn’t confirmed yet, Russell T Davies is producing the upcoming Doctor Who festive special. BBC’s Director of Drama, Lindsay Salt, has hinted at a truly spectacular comeback for the show.

Last October, following Disney’s announcement that it wouldn’t continue its partnership with the BBC for Doctor Who, Russell T Davies expressed gratitude to Disney+ for their excellent collaboration over the past two seasons and for the upcoming series, The War Between the Land and the Sea.

Despite recent changes, Sally assured everyone that the BBC is still dedicated to Doctor Who, which remains a hugely popular show. They’re thrilled that Russell T Davies will be writing another special Christmas episode for 2026.

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK, with classic episodes available via BBC iPlayer.
