Doctor Who’s Paul McGann lands new TV drama role

As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that Paul McGann, who brought the Eighth Doctor to life in one of my all-time favorite Doctor Who stories, is joining forces with Mark Gatiss for Alibi’s new period crime drama, Bookish. The connection between these two former Doctor Who actors is just the icing on the cake!

Doctor Who‘s Paul McGann has landed a new TV drama role.

The actor who portrayed the Eighth Doctor in “Doctor Who” has agreed to join the cast of “Bookish,” a series produced by Alibi, where Mark Gatiss, another ex-“Doctor Who” actor, also features and shares the role of co-creator.

In a collaboration with commentator and historian Matthew Sweet, Gatiss has written a crime drama set in post-war London, 1946. The intriguing series titled “Bookish” introduces an unconventional bookstore owner (portrayed by Gatiss himself) who assists the police in solving peculiar crimes.

Currently, the production of “Bookish” is underway in Belgium, filming a total of six episodes. These episodes are scheduled to be broadcast on Alibi in the year 2025. In this series, there will be three separate mysteries, each consisting of two parts.

Based on The Radio Times report, McGann will make an appearance in episodes five and six under the intriguing moniker of Mr. Kind.

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that some new faces will be joining the cast of the first season. Among them are Tim McInnerny from “One Day,” Elizabeth Berrington from “Lost Boys and Fairies,” Mark Umbers from “Hotel Portofino,” and Angeliki Papoulia from “The Lobster.” These talented actors will bring fresh perspectives and depth to the game world we’re exploring together. Can’t wait to see how they contribute to the story!

In every episode of “Bookish“, you’ll find familiar faces like Polly Walker from “Bridgerton” portraying Trottie Book, along with Daniel Mays known for his role in “Line of Duty” and Blake Harrison famously from “The Inbetweeners“.

In the upcoming series, McGann and Gatiss will reunite, with Gatiss having written the 2002 “Doctor Who” audio drama titled “Invaders from Mars,” which stars McGann as the Eighth Doctor.)

“I’m thrilled beyond words to adapt this series for the screen and immerse audiences in our captivating portrayal of post-War London,” Gatiss expressed.

“This overlooked era and its enigmatic mysteries inspired me to create ‘Bookish,’ a uniquely entertaining and amusing series that I’ve long desired to bring to life.”

In addition to being famous for his part in “Doctor Who,” McGann has acted in “Luther” and “Holby City” more recently.

In the United Kingdom, you can watch “Doctor Who” on BBC One, while viewers outside of the UK can find it on Disney+. For those with a UK connection, old episodes of “Doctor Who” are accessible on BBC iPlayer.
