Doctor Who’s Next Streaming Home: Why Apple TV+ Is the Perfect Match
The long-running television series Doctor Who has been in existence for over 60 years, yet not every decade has been smooth sailing. The show took a break lasting more than a decade, with only a TV movie to show for it, between 1989 and 2005. Now, after the series was successfully revived 20 years ago, it seems that its most challenging phase may be approaching. Recent news indicates that Disney+ is not proceeding with their collaboration with the BBC on the show, leaving the future of Doctor Who, or whether there will even be a future for it, uncertain.
It’s apparent that the BBC can no longer shoulder the costs for Doctor Who alone, and if the Disney+ agreement falls through, a fresh streaming platform will have to take over. Rumors suggest that the BBC is already negotiating with a few potential new hosts, but another possibility seems particularly promising.
Doctor Who May Go To Netflix Or HBO Max
Based on a recent report from Twitter account @MyTimeToShineH (previously verified through SFF Gazette, whose credibility can be inconsistent but has been accurate at times), discussions are allegedly underway between the BBC and both Netflix and HBO Max regarding potential future seasons of “Doctor Who.” The new producers will have a fresh start following Ncuti Gatwa’s departure as The Doctor, which occurred due to uncertainty about the show’s future. At present, “Doctor Who” has been put on hold while the BBC evaluates its options.
Both potential streaming partners seem logical for our show. Netflix, with its largest number of subscribers among all platforms, offers a substantial audience. On the other hand, HBO Max currently hosts nearly all seasons of the rebooted “Doctor Who,” except for those on Disney+. It remains uncertain whether any new agreement would involve shifting these seasons or if Disney+ will retain them.
Although both Netflix and HBO Max could continue the journey of The Doctor, I believe another streaming platform may offer an ideal home for the series instead.
Apple TV+ Should Take A Serious Look At Doctor Who
Apple TV+’s smaller subscriber base compared to Netflix or other popular streaming services doesn’t diminish the potential fit between it and “Doctor Who.” In fact, Apple TV+ boasts several critically acclaimed science fiction series, making it a promising home for “Doctor Who.” Sci-fi enthusiasts already enjoy shows like “Silo,” “Severence,” “The Foundation,” and the humorous “Murderbot” on Apple TV+.
Apple TV+ tends not to be as quick to cancel shows compared to many other streaming services. It appears that Disney+ was dissatisfied with the show’s viewership and decided to part ways due to this reason. We’ve noticed that platforms like Netflix and HBO Max are known for cancelling series that don’t meet their standards, so it’s not unreasonable to be concerned that “Doctor Who” might face a similar fate if it lands on one of those services again in the future.
Apple TV Plus: A Monthly Subscription at $9.99 with a 7-Day Trial
Although ‘Doctor Who’ isn’t in their collection yet, you can enjoy shows such as ‘Severance’, ‘Slow Horses’, ‘Silo’, and ‘Prime Target’ for just $9.99 per month. Plus, they offer a 7-day trial!
Note: This offer is available worldwide, but prices may differ depending on the region. Click to learn more and start your adventure today!
Regardless of where and when the next season of “Doctor Who” is aired, I’ll be content. Although the closing moments of the last episode didn’t leave me eagerly anticipating what’s next, I’m planning to continue watching it just to find out how things unfold. As we don’t have an exact date or location for its return, there are certainly many interesting topics to talk about as we patiently wait.
