Doctor Who’s new spin-off has a confirmed link to Torchwood: “In the same world”

Russell T Davies has revealed that the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will connect to the Torchwood series from the early 2000s. The five-episode story centers around the Sea Devils – now called Homo Aqua – who rise from the ocean depths to start a war with humans.

A terrifying, ancient species rises from the ocean, announcing its presence to the world and causing an immediate international crisis. Facing a threat to all of humanity, UNIT mobilizes to combat the ensuing war on land and sea.

So, I’m really excited for the new UNIT spin-off! It’s starting on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on December 7th, and the cast is awesome – Russell Tovey’s in it, along with Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave, Ruth Madeley, Adrian Lukis, and Alexander Devrient. Can’t wait to check it out!

Russell T Davies has confirmed that his new series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, takes place in the same universe as the popular sci-fi show Torchwood, which ran from 2006 to 2011. He told RadioTimes.com that the new series is set ‘in the same world‘ as the Torchwood spin-off.

The newest installment in the Doctor Who universe will connect directly to the events of Torchwood‘s third season, Children of Earth, and will bring back Colin McFarlane as General Austin Pierce.

When asked about the connection between the two spin-off shows, Davies explained that watching them together would be enjoyable. He said both series explore similar themes: encounters between alien or otherworldly species and humanity, specifically focusing on first contact and diplomatic interactions.

Davies, who returned as showrunner in 2023, explained that the new series reuses many of the sets from Children of Earth. Viewers will recognize familiar locations like staircases and corridors, as the story continues to unfold in the same world.

Davies explained the new series explores how humanity might approach first contact with an alien species, focusing on formal diplomatic talks. He described it as a departure from previous work, with new storylines, and jokingly hoped viewers would notice recurring locations.

Russell T Davies recently explained to Empire Magazine that the new series will tackle current events with a powerful and direct approach. He wanted to demonstrate the full potential and impact this show—and its universe—is capable of delivering to audiences.

This show feels incredibly current and relevant, tackling issues like the way water companies prioritize profits over people – and it’s something a show about water absolutely should address.

A new documentary series, “The War Between the Land and the Sea,” premieres on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday, December 7th. It will also become available internationally on Disney+ shortly after.
