Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa withdraws from BBC role – and here’s who’s replacing him
Ncuti Gatwa has had to pull out of the 2025 Eurovision final due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
On May 17th, a well-known actor from “Doctor Who” was scheduled to announce the outcomes of the UK’s National Jury for the Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final.
Instead, the BBC has revealed that Gatwa can no longer perform his role as Spokesperson for the UK. In his place, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, known for her hit song ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’, will be taking over this position.

Unfortunately, due to unexpected events, Ncuti Gatwa has had to withdraw from his role as Spokesperson for the Grand Final this coming weekend, according to a statement released by the BBC.
Indeed, it’s a pleasure to share the news: Live from the UK, the vibrant Friday night host on BBC Radio 2, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, will be announcing the jury results!
Ellis-Bextor expressed: “I’m thrilled about Eurovision, and it’s a great honor to be involved in the 2025 Grand Final. It’s truly an honor for me to reveal the UK jury’s score on this exceptional show that always emphasizes music over everything else.
“I am very much looking forward to delivering the iconic douze points from the United Kingdom!”
Although he won’t take part in the Grand Final on 17th May, viewers can catch a glimpse of Gatwa in the Doctor Who special episode with an Eurovision theme, airing earlier that same day.
This upcoming episode will zero in on the Universal Interstellar Song Competition, where various planets showcase their talents, and will include brief appearances by Rylan Clark and Graham Norton.
This year, band Remember Monday, representing the UK, will perform at the real-life Eurovision with their song titled “What The Heck Just Occurred?”.
‘We can’t believe what just transpired!’ is exactly how we feel at the moment. It’s almost unreal; our friendship spans such a long time, and never in our wildest dreams did we think we’d find ourselves doing something like this,” the band expressed upon their announcement in March.
If you’re a child and someone asks you about your future aspirations, a common response might be “I want to become a pop star.” So, it’s incredible that we get to experience this dream come true, being three good friends. It’s absolutely mind-blowing!
The Eurovision 2025 Final will broadcast on BBC One this coming Saturday, 17th May. As for Doctor Who, it is aired on BBC One in the United Kingdom, while it can be found on Disney+ elsewhere. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who are accessible via BBC iPlayer.
