Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa bids farewell to show in dramatic exit: “I’ve loved every minute of it”

Doctor Who spoilers follow.

Actor Ncuti Gatwa, known for playing Doctor Who, has taken leave from the science fiction series following a two-year stint. He expressed that the memories of his time there would always be cherished.

On the 31st of May this past Saturday, the episode titled ‘The Reality War’ unfolded, where the Time Lord, played by Gatwa, and his assorted team faced off against The Rani, portrayed by Archie Panjabi. Her goal was to release Omega, a malevolent entity, into the galaxy.

After a thrilling and speedy installment that delved into the theme of lost memories, showrunner Russell T Davies introduced a huge surprise at the end when The Doctor underwent regeneration.

Upon Gatwa’s departure, an unexpected turn of events unfolded: Billie Piper, known for her role as Rose Tyler in the sci-fi series earlier, returned after a 12-year absence, stepping into the role left vacant by regeneration and making her comeback on the show with a fresh appearance.

As a passionate fan, I was thrilled to see Billie in the latest episode of Doctor Who, but I haven’t seen her credited as ‘The Doctor’ in the end credits just yet. It leaves me eagerly anticipating how she’ll make her mark and contribute to the upcoming episodes.

In response to leaving the show, Gatwa stated, “There’s always a moment when you have to return the sonic screwdriver, and it signals the end. Yet, nothing quite prepares you for it.” This experience has been an unforgettable one for me, and this role will remain a significant part of my identity forever.

It’s indescribable, really, to embody the Doctor after being chosen for such an esteemed role that spans over six decades and resonates deeply with people around the world. The love and admiration it has garnered throughout the years is truly extraordinary.

The audience members are essentially integral characters and pulsating core of this series, and I am deeply grateful to the Whoniverse community, and its fans (Whovians), for embracing me and turning this journey into an emotionally moving adventure.

I’ve cherished every moment with that precious blue box, but now is the right moment to pass on the responsibility to someone new. Let them steer it and experience the joy just like I have. It will be dearly missed, and I’ll always appreciate its role in my adventures as the Doctor, and everyone who contributed to my journey.

Davies expressed gratitude, saying, “What a fantastic doctor! Thank you, Ncuti!” He further added, “As he concludes, this journey has been simply delightful. The team in Cardiff and everyone involved in the show over the past few years are truly fortunate to have been a part of Ncuti’s remarkable journey as he soars to unparalleled heights.
