Millie Gibson, known for her role in Doctor Who, has publicly addressed a damaging tabloid rumor about her and her character, Ruby Sunday. She described the rumor as “horrific” and explained why she was unable to respond and set the record straight immediately.
Gibson was revealed as the new companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor during the 2022 Children in Need telethon. Before viewers even saw her debut in the 2023 Christmas special, ‘The Church on Ruby Road,’ her entire first season had been filmed, and work had already started on her second.
Only, Ruby wasn’t the main companion for that season, Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra was.

Although she appeared in three episodes – including the two-part finale and the episode ‘Lucky Day’ – rumors circulated before filming that Gibson had been removed from the show due to difficult behavior. She was prevented from publicly addressing these reports.
While discussing her new series, The Forsytes, with The i Paper, actress Sophie Gibson described being in a difficult situation at the time.
As a huge fan, it was so tough when I saw something that didn’t seem right! I couldn’t just call it out, though, because everyone would have said I was revealing spoilers. It was a really difficult spot – I wanted to defend what I believed, but I didn’t want to ruin the show for anyone. Honestly, it was awful because it actually looked like what people were saying was true.
It was terrible,” she said. “What bothered me was how many people just said, ‘Oh, sorry to hear that,’ and I wanted to reply, ‘Yes, it did happen, but thanks anyway.’
She explained that she felt comforted by Ncuti Gatwa’s experience, as he also faced negativity when he was first cast in his role.
Gibson acknowledged he’s dealt with this issue before and is now focused on ignoring any negativity. She anticipates similar criticism will likely surface again in the future, but believes the best approach is to remain positive and not let it bother you.
