Michelle Gomez, famous for playing Missy in Doctor Who, is taking on another memorable role in a fresh adaptation of a classic psychological drama. This new part marks a shift for the actress, moving her from television to the theater stage.
Jenna Ortega, known for her roles in The Flight Attendant and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will play the iconic character of Nurse Ratched in a fresh take on Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
I’m so excited for this new production! It’s hitting the stage at The Old Vic in London, and they’ve added Ben Whishaw, who I’m a huge fan of, to an already amazing cast. Aaron Pierre, Giles Terera, Samson Ajewole, Kazeem Tosin Amore, Arthur Boan, Adam Bond, and Emma Cater are all going to be in it too – it’s going to be incredible!
What to Read Next
The story centers on Chief Bromden, a patient in a mental institution who has remained silent for years. He’s been mistreated and overlooked by a system that quickly categorizes and dismisses people. However, he has a story he wants to share, and he’s been waiting for someone to finally hear it, according to a description of the story (via Ticketmaster).
Okay, so this new guy, Randle McMurphy, walks in – total wildcard, a gambler, always stirring things up. He immediately throws the whole ward off balance, and honestly, it starts waking something up inside me and the other patients. See, Nurse Ratched runs things with an iron fist, and she’s basically crushed all our spirits and made us feel less than human. McMurphy’s arrival feels like the first crack in her control.

The story’s summary notes that McMurphy’s defiance helps the patients remember what it feels like to have a voice and be free. The Old Vic describes their new production as a fresh and impactful take on this classic tale.
Ken Kesey’s novel is widely considered a groundbreaking work that challenges traditional norms. It deeply examines the effects of power imbalances and how societies often suppress opposing viewpoints. A recent adaptation is being praised for presenting this important story in a fresh and impactful way.
The play, directed by Clint Dyer and based on a script by Dale Wasserman, opens on Wednesday, April 1st and continues through May 23rd. Shows will be held every day of the week, with Saturday matinees also available.

Ken Kesey’s novel has been made into a movie before, most notably by Miloš Forman in 1975. The film starred Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, and it was a major success, winning Academy Awards for both actors, as well as for Best Picture and Best Director.
Nurse Ratched was the focus of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series of the same name, which told the story of her origins before the events of the classic film. Sarah Paulson played Nurse Ratched, and the series also starred Cynthia Nixon and Finn Wittrock.
