Doctor Who’s Matt Smith lands role in another iconic sci-fi franchise

After approximately twelve years, Matt Smith, who previously starred in Doctor Who, has secured a part in yet another renowned science-fiction series.

According to Deadline, it’s been announced that the actor from Morbius and House of the Dragon has joined the cast for Shawn Levy’s (director of Deadpool and Wolverine) upcoming Star Wars film titled Starfighter.

Although specifics about the character’s role are yet to be revealed, there are reports suggesting that Smith may portray an antagonist in the upcoming project.

According to the report, multiple antagonists might appear in the movie. However, Smith’s role could potentially transform into the future foremost villain in the Star Wars universe.

Generally speaking, it’s expected that the upcoming movie will take place several years following “The Rise of Skywalker.” In this film, Ryan Gosling will play the main character, while Mia Goth will join him in the cast as well.

Regarding “The Rise of Skywalker”, there was a bit of perplexity prior to its release, as it appeared that Smith might have been cast in it. However, it turned out to be a misunderstanding.

Fans speculated whether he had filmed some scenes, perhaps portraying a younger clone or Palpatine’s son, that ended up being cut from the final version.

A while following the movie’s premiere, Smith admitted that he hadn’t filmed any scenes at all, explaining: “There were several discussions about my involvement, but ultimately, it didn’t come to fruition. It almost did, but the project never fully materialized.

Alas, the role I had been considered for in Star Wars ultimately became outdated, and they no longer needed it. Consequently, I didn’t get to be part of Star Wars. Oh well!

Although he didn’t disclose the specific character he was cast for, he hinted at an exciting opportunity, describing it as “an amazing role and idea, a significant one, similar to a pivotal plot point in a blockbuster movie like Star Wars.

At the moment, he expressed his willingness to potentially revisit the distant galaxy once more, and it seems that this long-awaited opportunity is now becoming a reality for him.

Star Wars: Starfighter is pencilled in for a 2027 release.
