Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker speaks out on returning to role after 2 years

As a long-time Whovian, I can hardly contain my excitement about Jodie Whittaker‘s return to the role of the Thirteenth Doctor in “The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures” audio series! Having grown up with the TARDIS as a constant companion, this news is like a sonic screwdriver straight to my heart.

Actress Jodie Whittaker, best known for playing Doctor Who, has discussed her impending comeback to the character in a fresh batch of audio stories.

Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the Thirteenth Doctor concluded in the 2022 TV episode ‘The Power of the Doctor’. However, she will be back to play the role once more in an audio format, joining Mandip Gill who reprises her character Yasmin Khan, in Big Finish’s upcoming series entitled The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures.

The series will comprise of 12 hour-long episodes, and is expected to launch in July 2025.

During her recent interview on BBC’s Morning Live, Whittaker shared that they have recorded around three episodes (so far), with many more in the current season. She expressed her excitement, stating it’s like living a dream – portraying the Doctor while not needing to memorize lines.

Playing the Doctor is my most cherished role. On my first day back, I confided in Mandip that I wasn’t sure if I could recall the voice. I even wondered which voice I had used before, and she reminded me, ‘That one.’ At first, I doubted I could pull it off again.

She additionally pointed out the challenges of performing without her usual physicality for the screen, stating: “They provided me with a chair, and I responded, ‘I can’t play the Doctor while seated, even if it’s not television! I need to be energetic and restless – I can’t sit still’.

She mentioned that they’ve provided her some room, and, in terms of her body, it’s just as tiring as performing on camera since she finds it hard to stay put.

“Imagine this ideal situation – you’re cast as the Doctor, working alongside Mandip, all in the comfort of a cozy studio instead of out in the chilly fields.

Speaking about the show’s summer reveal, Mandip Gill expressed that “Doctor Who” has significantly impacted both her professional journey and personal experiences. She also shared her eagerness to continue developing her character even more.

Working with Jodie once more feels like a cherished dream realized. Our bond is truly unique, so I’m confident our recording sessions will be full of joy and laughter.

In the United Kingdom, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can find it on Disney+. If you’re in the UK and want to watch classic episodes of Doctor Who, you can find them on BBC iPlayer.
