As a lifelong Whovian who has weathered countless regenerations and timey-wimey paradoxes, I must say that Steven Moffat’s latest offering for “Doctor Who,” titled “Joy to the World,” has piqued my interest like never before! Having grown up on Moffat’s enigmatic scripts, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with anticipation.
For quite some time now, Steven Moffat has been penning episodes for the popular series Doctor Who. In the latest season, he authored an episode titled “Boom,” where the Doctor turns into a stationary landmine on a distant planet. This episode was among the highest-rated of the revamped season, and on Christmas Day, Moffat is back with his holiday special, entitled “Joy to the World.
The television series, titled “Joy to the World,” features Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls.” In her role as Joy, Coughlan’s character is said to shatter your heart. Previously, Coughlan had hinted that Joy is a resolute woman whose life takes an unprecedented turn when she encounters the Doctor. At San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, Coughlan shared a sneak peek of this upcoming episode. Take a look:
Steven Moffat reveals the premise of “Joy to the World”!
Speaking on a local BBC channel, Moffat recently shared insights about his upcoming satirical Christmas special, which revolves around a hospitality setting. This festive episode unfolds within a hotel, where the management chooses to step out of their comfort zone and accommodate guests from various points in time and space. As he put it, “Suppose in the far future, a hotel chain cracks the code on time travel. Their initial business strategy? Offer unclaimed nights across their entire historical timeline,” Moffat elaborated.
It transpired that Steven Moffat hadn’t initially planned to write the script for the Christmas special. Instead, series showrunner Russell T. Davies requested his assistance. Essentially, Moffat stated, “I truly enjoy working on Doctor Who at Christmastime because I am such a fan of the holiday.” An email from Davies then arrived, saying, “Steven, I need to focus on Series Two. I’ll never finish this Christmas script. Could you step in and write another?” In other words, Davies wasn’t asking Moffat to complete his script but to create a new one entirely.
Without a doubt, the Christmas Special promises to deliver the chaotic, time-traveling excitement we all anticipate. I’m thrilled for Nicola Coughlan’s debut and the return of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, which is just around the corner at the end of next month. Let’s get this show on the road!
