Doctor Who writer reveals Christmas special cut scene
Originally, the most recent Christmas episode of Doctor Who included a full scene, but it was not included in the final version, as explained by its writer, Steven Moffat.
Often, scenes are shortened and smoothed out before they’re broadcast. As Moffat, the writer of ‘Joy to the World’ (the fifteenth festive special), explained, Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor originally had a longer scene involving his cleverness to navigate the upper floors of the Time Hotel.
He mentioned to Doctor Who Magazine that there had been an additional scene involving the Doctor receiving a room service tray, as it’s not possible to reach the higher levels without the right pass.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself echoing his words, “Ah, hand me that tray, if you please! The one flaw in all safety measures lies in convenience.” With a subtle nudge, he guided the tray against the elevator panel, and with a soft hum, the lift doors slid open. Seems like he’s always counting on our natural inclination towards laziness!
The story unfolds at the Time Hotel, a unique location where vacationers can travel through time at will. It features Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton” as a guest character named Joy Almondo. Her role includes assisting the Doctor in solving the enigma of a man who is handcuffed to a briefcase, which exerts control over whoever grasps it.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Russell T Davies and screenwriter Steven Moffat hinted at the possibility of creating a series that takes place in the Time Hotel.
“A spin-off! You could do a spin-off for that, Steven?” suggested Davies.
Moffat responded: “Isn’t that a program? It’s like a modern-day version of ‘Mr. Benn’, paying homage to the 1970s BBC kids’ show.
It’s quite possible that you might reopen the Time Hotel. I find it hard to envision a situation where the Doctor wouldn’t feel compelled to visit!
In the United Kingdom, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can find it on Disney+. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who are accessible via BBC iPlayer.
