Doctor Who writer confirms first 2024 Christmas special plot details
As a seasoned Doctor Who enthusiast, I must confess that the Christmas special for 2024 has piqued my interest like never before! Having traversed through countless episodes and time-traveling adventures, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement as Nicola Coughlan takes on the role of Joy in “Joy to the World.
Doctor Who spoilers follow.
Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat has revealed the first details about this year’s Christmas special.
In the upcoming movie “Joy to the World,” actress Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton” will take on the main character, portraying a holiday traveler who checks into a hotel in London during the festive season.
Soon enough, Joy’s peaceful vacation gets disrupted when a Silurian unexpectedly enters her hotel room, followed swiftly by the unexpected appearance of The Doctor (portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa), initiating an exhilarating journey through time.
In a chat with BBC South East, Moffat revealed that the upcoming special is set in a distant, distant time, featuring a hotel that discovers an unanticipated application for time travel.
As a time-travel enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder: If a hotel chain could leap through the annals of time, what would be their first move? They’d soon grasp the potential to market every unbooked night at their historical hotels across ages.
The storyline features a classic, Moffat-esque, time-traveling anomaly, reminiscent of the one shown in a sneak peek video released during the summer months.
In the video (that you can see up there), The Doctor teleports from the Orient Express, through World War II London, and into the current era, all in an attempt to find a unique individual.
Although Moffat declined to disclose additional plot details regarding ‘Joy to the World’, he expressed his enthusiasm about penning a fresh Christmas special, having been away from his Doctor Who showrunner role for quite some time.
He clarified that he truly enjoys watching “Doctor Who” during Christmas. In fact, he’s quite fond of the holiday season and deeply appreciates it.
Initially, Davies contacted the writer for assistance as he found it challenging to squeeze in the time to pen a 2024 Christmas special, given his plans for the following year’s entire season.
Previously this year, Steven Moffat expressed feelings of ambiguity when penning the 2024 Christmas episode of Doctor Who, as it could potentially mark his last writing contribution to the series.
In response to finishing “Boom” and “Joy to the World”, he mused aloud, “Could this be it? Is this the last hurrah?” He expressed his thoughts to TV Choice, indicating that the conclusions of both episodes seemed fitting for the Doctor, making him contemplate if these could potentially serve as a farewell.
In the United Kingdom, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can find it on Disney+. If you’re in the UK and interested in classic episodes of Doctor Who, you can check out BBC iPlayer for those.
