Doctor Who star’s new BBC British sitcom with an “outlandish” crime plot reveals first look

The BBC has given fans a first glimpse at its upcoming sitcom, Can You Keep a Secret? The show, scheduled to air next year, stars well-known actors including Dawn French (known from French & Saunders), Mark Heap (Friday Night Dinner), Craig Roberts (The Story of Tracy Beaker), and Mandip Gill (Doctor Who).

The new six-episode series was written by Simon Mayhew-Archer, known for producing the show This Country. He’s also the son of Paul Mayhew-Archer, who famously co-wrote The Vicar of Dibley alongside Richard Curtis.

Fran Drescher stars as Debbie Fendon, the strong-willed head of a family who unknowingly causes most of her children’s issues.

Roberts plays the role of Harry, and Gill plays his wife, Neha, who is a police officer – just as she was in the show Who. Heap plays William, Debbie’s husband; his sudden death sets in motion her wild and unlawful plan.

The thing is, he actually isn’t dead.

He was mistakenly reported as dead, and Debbie believes they could collect a large life insurance payment if no one finds out the truth. They plan to use the money to enjoy a comfortable retirement.

Since William mostly kept to himself already, she figured she could hide him in the attic until the money arrived, and no one would even realize he was gone. What could go wrong?

If Neha discovered their criminal scheme, she’d be furious. Meanwhile, Harry, who gets stressed easily, is struggling to decide between following his conscience and taking a potentially life-altering amount of money.

New photos from the show feature the main actors inside the comfortable house where it’s filmed. One striking image shows William tied to the bed with Debbie standing over him, creating a suspenseful scene. Other photos capture the cast filming on location in the West Midlands.

Can You Keep a Secret? will air on BBC One and stream on iPlayer in early 2026.
