Actress Ruth Madeley, known for her role in Doctor Who, has secured a main part in an upcoming film from Apple Original Films, stating that this role is a career highlight for her.
In the movie named “Being Heumann”, Marlee Matlin assumes the character of Judy Heumann, a prominent figure in the disability rights movement.
Under the guidance of Sían Heder, who previously directed ‘CODA’, the forthcoming movie is inspired by Marion Heumann’s popular autobiography titled “Being Heumann: A Bold Memoir of a Disability Rights Advocate”.
The movie chronicles Heumann, who initiates a 28-day protest at the San Francisco Federal Building, following her leadership in occupying the building with more than 100 disabled individuals.
The demonstrators swiftly unite into a close-knit group, determined not to disperse until the authorities implement Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, mandating that all federal premises be made accessible.

In a conversation with Variety, Madeley expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to portray Heumann. She referred to Heumann as both an iconic figure and a source of inspiration.
It was truly remarkable for Madeley to express that he felt deeply honored to portray a character who is a symbol and force within the disability rights movement, often referred to as ‘The Mother.’
For my personal growth, Judy has consistently served as an inspiring figure. I can’t wait to reveal her incredible journey to everyone out there, which I consider the opportunity of a lifetime.
Previously, Madeley played a role in “Doctor Who,” marking her debut as Shirley Anne Bingham during the special 60th anniversary episode that also featured David Tennant and Catherine Tate.

Later on, the actor who played a significant role in “Years and Years” took up that part again for the fresh episodes, working alongside the Fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.
Earlier discussing her role in the 60th anniversary episodes, Madeley commented on her character: “What makes her unique isn’t her being in a wheelchair – and that’s exactly how it should be.
She clearly understands her identity, she’s bold, she hails from the north, and she isn’t hesitant to step into the spotlight. In my opinion, she’s an excellent fit for the universe of Doctor Who.
